“Rapid evolution of the ionosphere-thermosphere system by space energy input and its possible feedback”
Abstract:
Large energy input from space into the Earth’s upper atmosphere causes heating and wind disturbances of neutral particles in the upper atmosphere. Particularly during large space weather events, human society is impacted by space energy input in forms of radio communication disruptions and satellite drag enhancements. Therefore, it is critically important to understand fundamental physical processes involved in redistribution of space energy input to the ionosphere-thermosphere system. Although our understanding of large-scale responses in the upper atmosphere has improved through statistical analyses and general circulation modeling, large energy input from space has been found on a smaller scale (~100 km), and it has been less explored how much such localized transient structures influence the upper atmosphere. This talk will present our recent upper atmospheric ion-neutral observation campaigns to address this important question through coordinated plasma and neutral measurements. The campaign results show that neutrals dynamically respond to abrupt plasma energy input much faster than previously thought. Channels of fast neutral winds can formed on a couple of hundreds km scale due to localized plasma flow channels. We also found that the thermosphere provides significant feedback to plasma in space. Finally, I will discuss our future project of high-resolution data-model coordination work toward further understanding space weather effects.
