“Understanding Mass and Energy Transport in the Coupled Geospace System” 



Abstract: 



Geospace science has historically been divided into the disciplines of solar and heliospheric physics, magnetospheric physics, and ionospheric/thermospheric science. These discipline boundaries are increasingly becoming obsolete, especially between the magnetosphere and ionosphere/thermosphere. Recent research shows that mass and energy can flow in both directions between the magnetosphere and ionosphere/thermosphere. The dynamics of the coupled system includes a number of feedback loops. This seminar will review recent progress in understanding mass and energy transport in the coupled geospace system with a particular emphasis on energetic ion outflow from the ionosphere into the magnetosphere. I will begin with a discussion of recent progress and outstanding issues with ion outflow modeling in coupled global geospace simulations. This discussion motivates a number of outstanding experimental needs. I will present ideas for expanding the capabilities of conventional ionospheric observational techniques to apply to a variety of cold plasma populations throughout geospace. The techniques to be discussed include novel incoherent scatter radar experiments and radio propagation experiments.
