Dear Everyone,

The 2017 Great California Shakeout earthquake drill is scheduled for this Thursday, October 19 at 10:19 a.m. (see website: http://shakeout.org/california/). Everyone is encouraged to pause for a few minutes and participate, at least to:

  * Note where and how you would take cover if an earthquake were to occur.

  * Check for possible falling hazards - and take steps to correct them!
  * Be mindful of the nearest emergency exits and fire extinguishers - and note the Geology Building/Slichter Hall evacuation areas (Young Drive or Court of Sciences, whichever is closer).
  * Double-check your own emergency supplies (food, water, medicine, closed-toe shoes, flashlight, emergency contact list).

Listed below are some valuable earthquake tips. Please review the information carefully and remember, awareness and preparation are vital to survival!

Thanks,

Carlene

P.S. As an additional (unrelated) resource for your review, also attached are active shooter safety tips from UCPD.

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE HAPPENS

  * Assemble your personal disaster supply kit (see attached list) and have it accessible at all times. Departmental supplies are very limited so it is essential that individuals have a personal emergency kit that includes water and food. Suggested items include:
     *   Food/snacks
     *   Water for 2-3 days
     * Backup eyeglasses and prescription medications
     *   Sturdy, closed-toe shoes
     *   Flashlight and batteries
     *   Battery-operated radio
     *   Emergency telephone numbers
     *   Out-of-area emergency contact numbers
  * Review the UCLA Office of Emergency Management resources web page: https://www.oem.ucla.edu/resources
  * Take the UCLA Health 1 Year Preparedness Challenge: https://www.uclahealth.org/Pages/emergency-preparedness/personal-preparedness/the-one-year-preparedness-challenge.aspx.
  * Explore helpful tips at the Earthquake Country Alliance website: http://www.earthquakecountry.org/roots/.
  * Add the UCPD phone number to your cellphone: 310-825-1491.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE (IF YOU ARE INDOORS)

  * "DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON." Duck under a desk or table, or between lecture hall seats. If you are not near sturdy furniture, drop to the floor next to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms.
  * Do not try to run out of a building during strong shaking; you can be killed or injured by falling debris (glass, roof tiles, concrete, etc.).

* Note that few open spaces in Westwood are far enough from glass or other falling debris to be considered safe refuge sites. Glass from high-rise buildings does not always fall straight down; it can catch a wind current and travel great distances.

  * Avoid windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture (filing cabinets and bookshelves), large appliances and cabinets filled with heavy objects.
  *   Do not use elevators.
  * If you use a wheelchair, lock the wheels and cover your head.
  * If you are at home and in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE (IF YOU ARE OUTDOORS)

  * Move to a clear area if you can safely walk.

* UCLA has no overhead power lines on campus but you should avoid buildings and trees.

  * If you are driving, pull to the side of the road and stop. Avoid stopping under overhead hazards or near buildings.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE (ONCE THE SHAKING STOPS)

  * If you are on campus, you are safer to remain inside a building after an earthquake unless there is a fire or gas leak.
  * Be prepared for aftershocks; they may be frequent and could exceed the first quake.
  * Check immediate vicinity for dangerous conditions such as fires, downed power lines and structure damage.
  * If you have fire extinguishers and are trained to use them, put out small fires immediately.
  * Check the people around you for injuries, and provide first aid. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of a gas leak, hazardous material spill, fire or falling debris.
  * Check land line phones to be sure they have not shaken off the hook and are tying up a line.
  * Inspect your residence and work areas for damage.

IF YOU ARE TRAPPED IN DEBRIS

  * Move as little as possible so you don't kick up dust. Cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
  * Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can hear where you are. Use a whistle if one is available (keep one in your emergency kit).

* Shout only as a last resort.
