Contribution of Kinetic Alfvén Waves to Energetic Electron Scattering and Precipitation from Plasma Sheet Injections

Yangyang Shen
UCLA EPSS
Energetic electron scattering and precipitation from the Earth's plasma sheet to the ionosphere is an important contributor to magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. This seminar will discuss the role of kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) in energetic electron scattering and precipitation associated with plasma sheet injection and dipolarization. Using two examples featuring conjugate observations between the ELFIN, MMS, and THEMIS missions, we present evidence of tens to hundreds of keV electron precipitation to the ionosphere potentially driven by KAWs. Taking into account electron bounce motion and guiding-center drifts, test particle simulations illustrate the Doppler-shifted Landau resonant interaction between injected electrons and KAWs at dipolarization-front magnetic field gradients. Injection electrons undergo efficient pitch-angle scattering on the time scales of seconds, resulting in energetic electron precipitation to the ionosphere consistent with observations..
