1. Call for Nominations for GEM Chair-elect, 2017-2019, deadline extension to March 17
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Jacob Bortnik on behalf of the GEM steering committee (jbortnik at gmail.com)

We would like to call on members for the GEM community for nominations of new chair-elect, and extend our previous deadline to March 17th to allow more time for the application process. The original announcement is included below:

The GEM steering committee is seeking nominations for a new chair-elect to serve in the period 2017-2019, before assuming the chairmanship over the period 2019-2021. The duties of the chair-elect include serving as a regular member on the GEM steering committee, and assisting the chair with the administration of the GEM group, workshop planning and organization.

To be considered, we request a 1-2 paragraph statement of interest (at most half a page) and a 2-page CV. Please send the application materials to jbortnik [at] gmail [dot] com by March 10th [now updated to March 17th] for full consideration. The GEM Steering committee will meet and make a decision shortly after the deadline for submissions.

For more information on the GEM steering committee membership and duties, please see the GEM webpage:

2. MEETING: MMS Science Workshop, Boulder, Colorado, June 6-8, 2017
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Stefan Eriksson (eriksson at lasp.colorado.edu)

Dear Colleagues,

Please mark your calendars for the next MMS Science Community Workshop, to be held on 6-8 June in Boulder, Colorado in the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The meeting includes an evening poster session and reception on Wednesday June 7.

All members of the science community are welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting, which is organized by the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado [http://lasp.colorado.edu].

For more details on registration and abstract submission, including hotel information, please visit:

http://lasp.colorado.edu/meetings/mms2017/index.php

Important dates:
Abstract submission deadline: 20 April 2017
Early-bird Registration [$195] deadline: 1 May 2017
Late Registration [$250] deadline: 15 May 2017

Abstracts will be solicited on MMS observations and numerical simulations with an emphasis on the six major science topics below:
 1) Magnetic Reconnection of the Ion and Electron Diffusion Regions
 2) Magnetopause
 3) Magnetotail
 4) Shock Physics
 5) Plasma Turbulence
 6) Energetic Particles

The main science sessions will be hosted in the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building [https://jscbb.colorado.edu/] adjacent to LASP with poster sessions to be held in the LASP SPSC facility.

Sincerely,
The Local Scientific Organizing Committee:
Narges Ahmadi, Bob Ergun, Stefan Eriksson, Allison Jaynes, Karlheinz Trattner, Maria Usanova, and Rick Wilder

3. Deadline Extended! IAGA 2017 Session on Magnetic Reconnection
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Daniel Gershman, Mikhail Sitnov (daniel.j.gershman at nasa.gov)

We encourage participation in a session on magnetic reconnection at the upcoming IAPSO-IAMAS-IAGA scientific assembly. The conference will be held on 27 August – 1 September 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa (http://www.iapso-iamas-iaga2017.com ). Abstract submissions are now due 17 March 2017 - extended from the previous deadline.

IAGA Session A25 - Magnetic reconnection (DIV III – DIV IV)

Magnetic reconnection is one of the most fundamental mechanisms of the transformation of magnetic energy into particle energy. It is responsible for many explosive phenomena in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, but the terrestrial magnetosphere is one of the best natural laboratories for its in situ investigation. The wealth of observations of reconnection-associated processes in the magnetosphere and recent advances in theory and high-performance computing make studies of this topic particularly compelling and timely. This symposium covers a broad range of phenomena associated with magnetospheric reconnection with a special focus on recent multi-probe observations by the Cluster II, THEMIS, Van Allen Probes, and MMS missions. Recent progress in theory and simulations of reconnection will also be discussed.

Specific topics include: magnetopause and magnetotail reconnection; thin current sheets; electron and ion diffusion layers; plasmoids, flux ropes and dipolarization fronts; associated non-reconnection plasma waves, including buoyancy and flapping motions; particle acceleration and heating; MHD, Hall-MHD and kinetic regimes; MHD, hybrid and full-particle simulations.
