1. GEM 2019 Workshop: Announcement of GEM Workshop Lunch Session about Issues for Underrepresented Attendees
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu)

We would like to alert everyone attending the 2019 GEM Summer Workshop that there will be a special session during lunch (12-1pm) on Wednesday, June 26. This event is to foster networking and provide a safe setting for discussions of issues facing GEM attendees in underrepresented groups, with a goal of enhancing inclusivity and equity for everyone at GEM. The event is open to anyone (underrepresented or not), and attendance is completely optional. Pizza will be provided for the first 50 or so attendees. Please contact Jacob Bortnik (jbortnik at gmail.com) or Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu) with any questions or concerns.

The Summer Workshop Plenary Committee (Jacob Bortnik, Paul Cassak, Hyunju Connor, Raluca Ilie, Allison Jaynes, Chih-Ping Wang, and Brian Walsh)

2. GEM 2019 Workshop: Python Session
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Alexa Halford, Armando Maldonado, Steve Morley, Kyle Murphy, Dan Welling (kylemurphy.spacephys at gmail.com)

Python is one of the mostly widely used and fastest growing programming languages. It is used in academia in research and as a teaching language, and in a wide range of industrial and commercial settings. It has a strong foundation in scientific computing, is widely available, easily accessible and best of all it’s free. At this year’s GEM we are organizing a Python session to provide a brief introduction to Python and discuss the possibility and utility of having a Python session every year. The session will be on Monday from 3:30-5:00 and will provide three tutorials: a brief introduction to Python by Dan Welling; an introduction to plotting in Python by Armando Maldonado; and working with data files, including NASA CDFs, in Python by Steve Morley. Following the tutorials, we will have a discussion about the future of Python sessions at GEM. The goal of the discussion is to determine the utility of a continuing Python session at GEM. As a researcher and scientist what would you like to see in Python session? An overview of magnetospheric/heliospheric packages? A tutorial on machine learning? An advanced plotting tutorial, such as mapping or 3D visualization? A session on workflow automation, interfacing with other languages, advanced Python (GPUs), coding best practices, or contributing to community projects?

A GitHub repository has been setup for the session (https://github.com/gemcommunity/gem_2019) where tutorials and basic installation instructions will be uploaded prior to the session.
