1. 2020 Space Weather Workshop
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Brian Jackson (bjackson at ucar.edu)

The 2020 Space Weather Workshop will be held April 20-24, in Boulder, Colorado. This meeting will bring together Federal agencies, the academic community, the private sector, and international partners to focus on the diverse impacts of space weather, on forecasting techniques, and on recent scientific advances in understanding and predicting conditions in the space environment.

The program will highlight impacts in several areas, including: aviation, human spaceflight and exploration, satellites, power grids, and other sectors affected by space weather. The conference will also include an update on the national and international space weather programs to mitigate and respond to space weather impacts on society. We welcome a broad range of participation, including representatives from research and development, operational organizations, policy development, and industries impacted by space weather.

The Space Weather Workshop is coordinated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and co-sponsored by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the NSF Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, and the NASA Heliophysics Division.

For workshop information and to register, please visit https://cpaess.ucar.edu/events/space-weather-workshop. The program, speakers, hotel information, information for student participation, and other relevant information will be announced in the next several weeks.

2. Call for Abstracts: COSPAR 2020 Session D3.5
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Maria Usanova, Yuri Shprits (maria.usanova at lasp.colorado.edu)

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to encourage you to submit an abstract to the D3.5: Particle Acceleration and Loss in the Earth and Planetary Magnetospheres session at the 43rd COSPAR Scientific Assembly, Sydney Australia, 15-22 August 2020.

Main Scientific Organizer: Maria Usanova
Deputy Organizer: Yuri Shprits

Abstract submission: https://www.cospar2020.org/abstracts.php
The abstract submission deadline is 14 February 2020.

Session details:
Since the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, understanding of the acceleration and loss processes in the Earth's magnetosphere and magnetospheres of the outer planets has been a central topic of research in the space physics community. Observations from the Van Allen Probes, ARASE, MMS, Cluster, Double Star, THEMIS, NOAA POES and GOES, Lomonosov, and a number of CubeSat missions provided a vast amount of data. New planetary missions such as Juno and JUICE will provide additional information about the radiation environments of the outer planets, which will lay the foundation for quantitative comparative studies. In this session, we invite modeling and observational contributions that focus on the physics of acceleration and loss of particles in the Earth and planetary magnetospheres.

3. Los Alamos Space Weather Summer School (June 1 - July 31 2020) - Application Deadline Extended to Jan 31, 2020
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Mike Henderson (mghenderson at lanl.gov)

The deadline for submitting applications to the Los Alamos Space Weather Summer School has been extended to Jan 31, 2020.

See website at http://swx-school.lanl.gov for details on application process.

4. Assistant/Associate Professor in Space Physics Position at The University of Texas at Arlington
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Daniel Welling, Ramon Lopez (dwelling at uta.edu)

Assistant/Associate Professor in Space Physics
The Department of Physics
at The University of Texas at Arlington
Position ID: F00208P

The Department of Physics at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in space physics beginning August 2020. The space physics group in the department is the recipient of a Phase-1 DRIVE Center grant that focuses on modeling and analysis of interhemispheric asymmetries in the geospace system. The successful candidate will be able to contribute substantially to that work, either in the area of modeling or data analysis, and to enhance the ability of the team to win the Phase-2 competition for a full DRIVE Center.

The key objective is to hire faculty members with outstanding qualifications who share the University’s core values of high standards of excellence in teaching, innovative and collaborative research, and service, combined with fostering an open and inclusive environment and with promoting diversity and participation of groups that are currently underrepresented.

The successful candidate must meet all expectations of a tenure-track faculty candidate: to establish an independent, externally funded research program in space physics, to provide research and mentoring opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, and to teach physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. An earned doctorate in physics or a closely related field is required.

To apply applicants should go to http://uta.peopleadmin.com/ and submit the following materials: a cover letter, full curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching objectives and contact information of at least three references.

Questions about the openings should be addressed to Dr. Ramon Lopez via e-mail (relopez at uta.edu).

Review of applications will begin on March 4, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled.

EEO/AA Policy
UTA is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Additionally, the University prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation. A criminal background check will be conducted on finalists. UTA is a tobacco free campus.

Research Scientist (Assistant, Associate or Full) - Senior Fellow- Space Sciences Laboratory

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a PhD scientist who has demonstrated leadership and creativity in the space sciences. SSL currently has active science groups in Solar and Heliospheric Physics, Geospace Science, Astrophysics & Exoplanets, and Planetary Science/Astrobiology. The position is open to scientists who have research programs related to one of these groups or potentially on a topic that may lead to the establishment of a new science group (e.g., Earth and Atmospheric Science). Scientists engaged in instrument and/or mission development are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will have Principal Investigator status upon joining SSL, and the level of the appointment (Assistant, Associate, or Full Research Scientist) will depend on CV and qualifications. While the applicant is expected to build a self-supporting research group, startup funds will be provided. It is expected that the applicant will have a previous record of participating in or leading successful projects or proposals.
If the applicant’s research falls under one of the existing SSL science groups, the Associate Director of the science group will be the applicant’s formal supervisor. Otherwise, the applicant will report to the SSL Director. The appointment is open-ended contingent on funding. A start date between 2020 August and October is envisioned, but this is flexible. This is a full-time position.
