Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the COSPAR-2016-PSW.3 session ‘From
Ionospheric Indices towards Standardized Activity Scales for Space Weather
Services’ next year (https://www.cospar-assembly.org/ ), to be held at the
41st COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Istanbul from 30 July - 7 August, 2016.

We kindly invite you to submit an abstract to this session before the
deadline at 12 February 2016.

COSPAR-16-PSW.3

Session Title: From Ionospheric Indices towards Standardized Activity
Scales for Space Weather Services

Description:

Ionospheric perturbations covering a broad spectrum of spatial and temporal
scales may have a severe impact on the performance of radio systems such as
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and remote sensing radars.
Currently, characterization of the onset, strength and duration of
ionospheric disturbances is achieved primarily through the use of
geomagnetic indices such as Kp, Ap or Dst. However, increasing challenges
on accuracy, continuity, availability and reliability of radio systems
requires specific ionospheric information on the degree of ionospheric
perturbation, at least in near real time and, if possible, in advance.
Since an ionospheric activity or perturbation index can provide quick
proximate information oncomplex space weather relationships, such an index
would be of great practical value for customers of radio systems. To
identify candidate indices with the potential to be standardized as
ionospheric disturbance indices on an international level, we welcome
studies that systematically address this topic keeping in mind the concrete
application background. Benefits of the suggested index approach should be
demonstrated and evaluated with respect to a selected application.
