MEETING: DAP-2017 Meeting Schedule, January 11-13, Boulder, CO

The Dust, Atmosphere and Plasma environment of the Moon and Small Bodies (DAP-2017) workshop will be a forum to (i) discuss our current understanding of the surface environment of the Moon, the moons of Mars, and asteroids, (ii) share new results from past and ongoing missions, and (iii) describe expectations for planned upcoming missions to airless bodies and comets. The workshop will take place January 11-13, in Boulder, CO.

MEETING: 12th International Conference on Numerical Modeling of Space Plasma Flows (ASTRONUM-2017), Saint Malo, France, 26-30 June, 2017

Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Maison de la Simulation (CEA/CNRS/UPS/UVSQ), France will organize ASTRONUM-2017. The conference will cover the following topics:

(1) Advanced numerical methods for space, astrophysical and geophysical flows;
(2) Large-scale fluid-based, kinetic, and hybrid simulations;
(3) Turbulence and cosmic ray transport;
(4) Magnetohydrodynamics
(5) Software packages for modeling and analyzing plasma flows /Visualisation

with the application to

(1) Physics of the Sun-Heliosphere-Magnetosphere;
(2) Interstellar medium and star formation;
(3) Cosmology and galaxy formation;
(4) Dynamo effect;
(5) Stellar Physics.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together leading experts in applied mathematics, space physics, astrophysics, and geophysics to discuss the application of novel numerical algorithms and petascale parallelization strategies to computationally challenging problems. 

The conference will be structured around invited, 40-minute keynote and 25-minute regular talks, and a limited number of contributed talks, with the attempt to have no parallel sessions. The conference web site will be established in a few days and provide the information about the conference venue, registration, and means of transportation. MEETING: UN/US Workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative, Chestnut Hill, MA, July 31 - August 4, 2017

UN/US Workshop on the International Space Weather Initiative: 
The Decade after the International Heliophysical Year 2007

July 31 – August 4, 2017

This workshop marks the 10th anniversary of the International Heliophysical Year, which led to the genesis of the International Space Weather Initiative. It is organized in the framework of the Basic Space Science Initiative of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications to highlight the achievements made over the past ten years and to show-case the worldwide development of science, capacity building, and outreach. The UN Workshops on ISWI have been aimed at providing a global forum for space weather experts from developed and developing countries, including representatives of the major instrument operators and data providers. In particular the Workshop will focus on recent advances made in scientific research by utilizing ISWI instrument data in conjunction with space mission data in adding significant new knowledge on space weather phenomena near Earth and interplanetary space.  

The workshop will begin with a high level international forum on the economic and societal effects of extreme space weather. This forum will include keynote speakers from major international organizations followed by a panel session to discuss issues and policies for acknowledging space weather as a global challenge.

The workshop is also held in preparation for UNISPACE+50 in 2018, the 50th anniversary of the first UN Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE), held in Vienna in 1968. The three components of the Workshop will also help develop a coherent international policy towards an appropriate response to space weather.

Please consider submitting an abstract to our sessions, and traveling to Montreal to attend this conference! Note that there is also a very strong URSI Young Scientist program, which will provide substantial support for young researchers under 35 to attend this meeting. Additionally, students can also participate in the Student Paper competition. Thus this conference is an excellent opportunity for any early career scientists or students you know of!

The program highlights a General Lecture by Steven A. Cummer on "Transient luminous events and terrestrial gamma ray flashes", a Commission H Tutorial lecture by Craig Rodger on "Drivers, detection, and wider significance of precipitation from the radiation belts" and tutorial lectures of other URSI commissions.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of URSI, the instructions for abstract submission allow multiple types of submissions, from a basic abstract through to a 4-page summary paper. Please note that a usual short abstract of ~250 words is sufficient for normal or invited submissions of an oral or poster presentation in all sessions relevant to our field. However, application for a URSI Young Scientist Award requires submission of a 4-page summary paper. This will be used by the URSI national committees to rank the applicants and determine who gets the support. A longer paper is required to participate in the Student Paper competition.

SPEDAS Session at Mini-GEM, San Francisco, December 11

Dear SPA community,

The Space Physics Environment Data Analysis Software, a grass roots multi-mission analysis effort for Heliophysics, will be having a session at the mini-GEM meeting in the afternoon of December 11, 2016 (Holiday Inn Golden Gateway in San Francisco) in the Nevada room from 1:50 to 3:20 PM.

This will include the MMS, THEMIS, ERG and other Heliophysics/Geospace stakeholders. Our tentative agenda:

First 30-45 minutes: Tutorial of SPEDAS and recap of recent plugin developments, including the MMS plugin.

15-30 minutes:  Presentations and status updates from other plugin developers and SPEDAS users

Remaining time:  Open discussion of future development roadmap, feature and enhancement requests, Q and A with SPEDAS and plugin users and developers.

Special Issue in JGR-Space Physics on "Observations, Simulations and Theory of Electric Currents in the Solar System" -- Second Announcement

As the guest editors, we invite you to submit papers to this Special Issue of JGR-Space Physics, which covers topics across the full spectrum of electric current phenomena relevant to all space plasma regions in our Solar System.

The Call for Papers reads (partially): "Electric currents are fundamental to the structure and dynamics of space plasmas. New developments in observations, simulations and theory make it timely to collect new research studies on electric currents. Hence, this special issue of JGR-Space Physics solicits research papers on electric currents in the ionospheres and magnetospheres of the Earth and other planets, in the heliosphere, and on the Sun. Studies are welcome addressing not only current system structure and dynamics but also the impacts and ramifications on the local space environment."
