MEETING: Space Weather Workshop, April 26-29, 2016, REGISTRATION is now OPEN!

From: Susanne Demaree (sdemaree at ucar.edu)

Space Weather Workshop is an annual conference that brings industry, academia, and government agencies together in a lively dialog about space weather. What began in 1996 as a conference for the space weather user community, Space Weather Workshop has evolved into the Nation’s leading conference on all issues relating to space weather.

MEETING: Beacon Satellite Symposium, June 27 – July 1, 2016, Abstract Deadline February 15th

From: Patricia Doherty (patricia.doherty at bc.edu)

This notice is a reminder that the abstract deadline for the 2016 Beacon Satellite Symposium is February 15th. This meeting will be held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy on June 27 – July 1, 2016. Dr. Sandro Radicella and Dr. Bruno Nava have graciously offered to be the local hosts this symposium.

This meeting will provide a unique opportunity for ionospheric scientists from all over the world to meet and collaborate on the ionospheric effects on radio propagation. This meeting is primarily sponsored by the Beacon Satellite Group of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Commission G. The Beacon Satellite Group is interdisciplinary, servicing science, research, application and engineering interests. These interests include all aspects of satellite signals observed on the ground and by receivers on-board satellites.

The Beacon Satellite Studies Group was originally formed in 1972, with the first Symposium at Graz, Austria. Symposia have continued to meet at two to four year intervals with meetings held at various worldwide locations. From the beginning, the two main areas of interest in Beacon Satellite Studies have been Ionospheric Electron Content and Scintillation. With more recent developments in ionospheric tomography, occultation techniques, assimilation models, distributed arrays of ionospheric measurements, IHY and IPY activities and satellite based navigation and communication systems; these studies have gained new momentum and perspectives.
We invite you to consider attending this distinctive symposium. Details on the abstract submittal process together with all the other organizational details are available on the Beacon Satellite web site at: http://t-ict4d.ictp.it/beacon2016.

It is our intent to waive the registration fee and to assist travel costs for a limited number of students and attendees from developing countries. The total level of assistance will depend on sponsorship funding. Information on applications for assistance will also be available soon on our web site.

We sincerely hope to see you in Italy for the 19th International Beacon Satellite Symposium.

Patricia Doherty, Chair, Beacon Satellite Studies Working Group, URSI Commission G
Bruno Nava, Co-Chair, Beacon Satellite Studies Working Group
Andrzej Krankowski, Co-Chair, Beacon Satellite Studies Working Group

SESSION: COSPAR 2016 Session S.3 "Novel Techniques for Measurement and Processing of Solar and Space Data" (not included in the special SPA Newsletter issue for COSPAR 2016)

From: Figen S. Oktem (figeno at metu.edu.tr)

We would like to invite you to submit contributed abstracts to the event S.3: “Novel techniques for measurement and processing of solar and space data” at the 41st COSPAR Scientific Assembly, which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from July 30 to August 7, 2016. Details of the event are given below.

The abstract submission deadline is 12 February 2016. Abstracts can be submitted using the following link:

https://www.cospar-assembly.org/

Scientific Organizing Committee:
Figen S. Oktem, Middle East Technical University, Turkey
Farzad Kamalabadi, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA
Joseph M. Davila, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, USA

Session Title:
S.3: Novel techniques for measurement and processing of solar and space data

Session Description:
Unprecedented observations enabled by advances in instrumentation, along with the development of sophisticated information processing techniques provide a unique opportunity for improving our understanding of the space environment. This event aims to bring together a cross-disciplinary research community that work on the development of innovative instrument concepts and data processing techniques needed to address fundamental scientific questions in space and solar physics. Main key topics are

(i) Novel measurement techniques for next-generation instrumentation, which include new instrument concepts and design approaches for remote and in-situ sensing of space plasmas, as enabled by emerging technologies, and with the goals of addressing challenging observational tasks and providing unprecedented information with improved capabilities such as low-cost, low-power, lightweight, high-resolution, high-accuracy, and high-bandwidth

(ii) Novel mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques for information processing, with an emphasis on advanced data-driven methods that combine theoretical models, observational data, and reconstruction techniques (in concert) for meaningful scientific inference, optimal processing methods for autonomous detection, tracking, and prediction of solar and space events from multiple, heterogeneous, and distributed data sets (such as EUV imagers, spectrographs, magnetograms, coronographs, etc.), dimensionality reduction for increasing volumes of data

University access to NCAR HPC

From: Michael Wiltberger (wiltbemj at ucar.edu)

CISL is now accepting requests from university-based researchers for large-scale allocation requests; submissions are due March 28. The spring opportunity encompasses both university requests for large allocations and Climate Simulation Laboratory (CSL) requests.

The CSL ensures that computing time is available for researchers with extremely demanding, high-profile climate simulations. Typically these require 10 million core-hours or more per year, perhaps for several years, and may produce many terabytes of model output that must be stored for analysis and comparison with other simulations and with observations. See the CSL web page for details. https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/user-support/allocations/climate-simulation-laboratory-csl

Large allocations on Yellowstone are those for more than 200,000 core-hours. CISL accepts requests from university researchers for these large-scale allocations every six months. For submission instructions and information regarding available resources, see the CISL HPC Allocations Panel (CHAP) page. https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/chap

Please contact cislhelp at ucar.edu if you have any questions about these two opportunities or help determining which may be a better fit for your planned computational work.
