MEETING: 2016 CEDAR-GEM Joint Workshop, Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 19-24, 2016 - Registration is OPEN!

From: Susanne Demaree (sdemaree at ucar.edu)

We are excited to present the 2016 CEDAR-GEM Joint Workshop registration website at http://www.cvent.com/events/2016-cedar-workshop/event-summary-a9c1f9d3db5e404bb3350dd04171394a.aspx.

Due to the current funding climate, our CEDAR Workshop and community proposal funding has been reduced. In the past, CEDAR has funded 130-150 students each year, but the current student funding has been reduced to 125 students. The CEDAR Science Steering Committee (CSSC) is committed to supporting as many students as possible. Therefore, to partially compensate for the limited resources the CSSC has decided on the following:

1) Only students who present a poster may receive funding. Students do not have to be first author but must present a poster. Student travel support will be limited to the first 125 students that request it during the registration process. No requests will be taken outside of the registration process.

2) We have increased the student registration fee and it has been changed to include all student types. All students are required to pay a student registration fee this year. The student registration fee includes the CEDAR-GEM Welcome Reception, the CEDAR Student Lunch, the CEDAR-GEM Student Dinner and the CEDAR-GEM Banquet Dinner, in order to maximize the opportunity for networking.

3) Breakfast is included in the hotel rates at the Drury Plaza Inn and the Eldorado hotels, therefore here will be no group CEDAR-GEM student breakfasts.

We look forward to seeing you in Santa Fe!

MEETING: Partially Ionised Plasmas in Astrophysics (PIPA), Tenerife, Spain, August 29 – September 2, 2016, First Announcement

From: Paul Song (Paul_Song at uml.edu)

We invite abstracts for the forthcoming meeting on “Partially Ionised Plasmas in Astrophysics" (PIPA) that will take place in Tenerife (Spain) in the period 29th August-02 September, 2016.

The dynamics of partially ionized astrophysical plasmas is a relatively new and rapidly growing topic of research. There are growing evidences of the importance of the effects of plasma partial ionization in different astrophysical environments, such as solar chromosphere, interstellar medium, protostellar discs, planetary magnetospheres and ionospheres, etc. The meeting aims to broaden and strengthen the collaboration of scientists working in partially ionized plasmas in astrophysics and space science and to develop common scientific interest that could enhance cross-collaborations between the different fields.

The meeting will focus on 4 inter-related topical themes:

Session 1: Fundamental physical processes in partially ionised plasmas
Session 2: Waves and instabilities in partially ionised plasmas: theory and observations
Session 3: Turbulence, dynamo and non-linear processes
Session 4: Magneto-convection, flux emergence and reconnection in partially ionised plasmas

The abstract submission (for oral or poster contributions) is open via the official conference website: www.iac.es/congreso/pipa2016

At this address you will also find information about registration, accommodation, scientific and social programme.

IMPORTANT DATES:
• 5th March 2016: Registration/Abstract submission starts

ISSS Course on “Ground and space-based instruments for future research in Solar-Terrestrial physics,” L’Aquila, Italy, June 6-10, 2016

From: Paola Solini (ssc at aquila.infn.it)

Second Announcement
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF SPACE SCIENCE
Course on “Ground and space-based instruments for future research in Solar-Terrestrial physics” of the International School of Space Science.

The International School of Space Science of the Consorzio Interuniversitario per la Fisica Spaziale organizes a Course on “Ground based and space instruments for future research in Solar-Terrestrial physics”, to be held in L’Aquila, Italy, June 6-11, 2016 at the Gran Sasso Science Institute and directed by F. Berrilli, S. Jefferies, C. Scotto. Applications are due before March, 27 2016.
The course is designed for PhD students and young post-doctoral researchers. The school will offer an interactive, hands-on approach to the computational and experimental techniques that will be applied in the next generation of ground- and space-based instruments for solar-terrestrial physics related research. In particular, a mix of experienced scientists and engineers will provide an integrated overview of the experimental techniques that are being applied in the observation and forecasting of Solar Activity, Space Weather, and the conditions in the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere: all of which are important components of Space Situational Awareness.
