MEETING: 43rd Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods - Abstract Deadline June 15

From: Daniel Whiter (opticalmeeting at soton.ac.uk)

The 43rd Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods (43am) may be of interest to members of the AGU SPA community,
particularly those studying the thermosphere/ionosphere, aurora, and/or airglow - topics which are usually well-represented at this meeting.

The meeting will take place on 15-19 August 2016 in Winchester, UK, hosted by the University of Southampton. We invite abstracts related to
any region of the atmosphere, using any type of optical data or methods, or related topics including modelling of optical phenomena and optical
instrumentation.

For more information and to register for the conference, please visit http://43am.southampton.ac.uk.

We are able to offer good value accommodation as part of your registration, but please be aware that the deadline for registering with
the accommodation option is 15 May 2016. Unfortunately we will not be able to offer accommodation after this date.

MEETING: Global Modelling of the Space Weather Chain. October 24-28, 2016, Helsinki, Finland -- Call for Abstracts

From: Andrew P. Dimmock (andrew.dimmock at aalto.fi)

We are now accepting abstracts for the upcoming workshop "Global Modelling of the Space Weather Chain" to be held in Helsinki, Finland from 24 - 28 October 2016.

Abstract submission deadline is 31 July 2016

The discussed topics will include, but are not limited to the following areas:
1) Solar-wind and CME modelling
2) Global and Local Geo-space modelling
3) Operation space weather needs
4) Model integration

Format: Talks, posters and open discussion sessions.

Fees: The conference fee is 150eur for full participants, and 100eur for students.

We welcome submissions from both global and local modellers; those discussing local-global model integration are particularly encouraged. In addition, synergetic model-data themed abstracts are encouraged, particularly on the subject of data-assimilation.

Student support: student support is available to a limited number of students. Information on how to apply can be found on the website.

Information on how to submit your abstract is posted on the workshop webpage (www.spaceweatherchain2016.aalto.fi) along with other practical information.

Please direct all enquiries to questions.gmswc at gmail.com and we will respond as soon as possible.

We look forward to receiving your abstracts and hope to see you in Helsinki.

Kind regards,
Andrew P. Dimmock, T. I. Pulkkinen, A. Osmane, E. Kilpua and M. Palmroth

RHESSI Science Nugget No. 274

From: Hugh Hudson (hhudson at ssl.berkeley.edu)

“Data-driven radiative hydrodynamic modeling of SOL2014-03-29,” by Fatima Rubio da Costa: RADYN modeling of multiple impulses.

See
http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/wiki/index.php/RHESSI_Science_Nuggets
listing the current series, 2008-present, and

for the original series, 2005-2008.

We publish these at roughly two-week intervals and welcome contributions,
which should be related, at least loosely, to RHESSI science.

HAO: Newkirk Graduate Research Fellowship, Application Deadline July 1, 2016.

From: Matthias Rempel (rempel at ucar.edu)

The High Altitude Observatory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research announces the availability of a Newkirk Fellowship, which will support graduate research until the completion of the Ph.D. degree (usually 2-3 years). The application deadline is July 1, 2016. The position is available starting from October 1 2016.

Eligible candidates must have already passed their comprehensive exams and must have research interests that are compatible with current HAO research pursuits. During the period of thesis work it is expected that the student will spend at least six month per year in residence at HAO, and work closely with a HAO staff scientist that also serves on the student's thesis committee (preferably as co-chair).

Please see https://www2.hao.ucar.edu/partnerships/visitor-program/newkirk-fellowship for details on eligibility, benefits and the application process. Contact Matthias Rempel (rempel at ucar.edu) or Megan Delaney (mdelaney at ucar.edu) for further information.

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral research position in Solar Magnetohydrodynamics at the University of Dundee (UK)

From: David Pontin (d.i.pontin at dundee.ac.uk )

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in the area of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The position is available to work on a project within an STFC consolidated grant to study the behaviour of complex magnetic fields in the solar corona. Topics will include studying the topology of coronal magnetic fields and determining the effect of reconnection on the dynamics of these fields.

The successful candidates will join a dynamic MHD group at Dundee that consists of three permanent members of staff (Prof G. Hornig, Drs D. Pontin and A. Russell), a postdoctoral fellow, Dr S. Candelaresi, and three PhD students. The projects are funded as part of a Consortium that also includes Dr A. Yeates at the University of Durham. Further details about our group in Dundee can be found here:
http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/mhd/

The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of MHD and will have extensive experience in either one or both of the following: (i) computational MHD/hydrodynamics and code development, (ii) mathematical modelling of plasmas or fluids. Experience in solar physics observations would also be beneficial. Applicants must hold a PhD in solar physics, plasma physics or applied mathematics by the start of the project.

The position is available for three years, from July 1st 2016. The starting salary will be on Grade 7 of the UK Universities' pay scale, around GBP 30-35K, depending on experience.
