JGR-Space Physics Editor Blog Monthly Highlights

From: Mike Liemohn (liemohn at umich.edu)

I realized this month that I never shared the list of awardees for this year's excellence in refereeing prize from AGU, which we selected back in March. Based on our size, we got to pick 12 winners. This is a very hard task, as there are many more excellent reviewers than this.

October 17: Peer Review Week (it's a thing)

Quo Vadis Workshop Report Available

From: David Hysell, Scott McIntosh, Josh Semeter, Jeff Thayer, Mike Wiltberger (wiltbemj at ucar.edu)

Scientists from across the geospace domain participated Exploring the Geospace Frontier: Quo Vadis workshop sponsored by NSF. The main goal was to identify mechanisms for advancing space weather observations and prediction capabilities. The collective of nearly 100 space scientists reached a consensus that now is the time to invest in infrastructure and observational facilities to meet the societal need and scientific challenges posed by Space Weather. Workshop presenters outlined numerous observing strategies and platform concepts, each with the potential to transform space weather forecast capability in one or another domain. All considered it imperative to develop a conceptual community-wide NSF Major Research Equipment Facilities Construction (MREFC) proposal to bring these platform concepts together into an end-to-end (dedicated) space weather research facility. To develop this plan further, it was determined that we must, as a community-leading group, invest time to evaluate, prioritize, and scope the components of such a cross-cutting initiative.

The full workshop report for the 2016 Quo Vadis Workshop is now available online at

https://www2.hao.ucar.edu/events/GeospaceFrontier2016

The workshop organizing committee thanks all those that participated in the workshop and looks forward to further developments in this exciting project.

Respectfully submitted,

MEETING: 17th Solar Orbiter Workshop Second Announcement (3-7 April, 2017, Granada, Spain)

From: Jose Carlos del Toro Iniesta (ada at astro.uio.no)

Registration is open. Visit our web page at http://spg.iaa.es/solo2017/

Rationale:
The Solar Orbiter mission will bring the community an excellent opportunity for doing unique science that embraces most solar topics from the interior up to the heliosphere employing novel vantage points. The combined use of results from its four in-situ and six remote-sensing instruments will provide an unprecedented view of the Sun and the interplanetary medium. Aimed at discussing most of these topics, the 7th Solar Orbiter Workshop entitled “Exploring the solar environs” will be held in Granada, Spain, from the 3rd through the 6th of April, 2017. Overviews, prospects, and new science about the solar interior, the photospheric structure, dynamics, and magnetic fields, the chromosphere, the corona, the solar wind, and the heliospheric magnetic fields and particles are scheduled. Synergies with other missions and ground-based observatories will also be covered. Theoreticians, observers, and instrumentalist astronomers are encouraged to attend.

Call for Papers to the MMS Special Collection of JGR (1st Notice)

From: Matthew Argall (matthew.argall at unh.edu)

The Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) mission is preparing a special collection in the Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR) that will contain detailed reports of discoveries made during the first primary mission phase. Anyone analyzing MMS data is encouraged to submit. Details are below:

SUBMISSION DATES:
Open: Dec. 1, 2016
Close: April 15, 2017

TITLE:
Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) mission results throughout the first primary mission phase

DESCRIPTION:
The Magnetosphere Multiscale (MMS) mission was launched March 15, 2015 with the goal of studying the microphysics of magnetic reconnection. During its second day-side pass, the inter-spacecraft separation was reduced to as little as 7km, or 2-3 electron skin depths at the magnetopause, allowing electron-scale physics to be spatially resolved and investigated. The unprecedented temporal resolution of the fields and particle instrument suites has advanced our understanding of dynamical processes from the bowshock, through the magnetosheath, across the magnetopause and into the inner magnetosphere and magnetotail. This special issue expands upon discoveries made during the first primary mission phase and tail pass, and provides in-depth reports of new findings from the second day-side pass.
