Observations of the Sun and Earth from space have revolutionized our view and understanding of how solar variability and other natural and anthropogenic forcings impact Earth’s atmosphere and climate. Since 1978 – more than three solar cycles – the total and spectral solar irradiance (TSI and SSI) and global terrestrial atmosphere and surface have been observed continuously, providing unprecedented quality data for Sun-climate studies. The 2018 Symposium will convene experts from across the solar-terrestrial community and from various disciplines that include Sun-climate connections, atmospheric physics and chemistry, heliophysics, and metrology to discuss solar and climate observations and models during this crucial period near the end of the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) and the start of the Total and Spectral Solar Irradiance Sensor (TSIS) Mission.  The agenda consists of invited and contributed oral and poster presentations in six sessions.

Announcement of the 11th Post-Graduate Course in Space and Atmospheric Science

Applications are now being invited for the Eleventh Post Graduate Diploma Course in Space and Atmospheric Science  which will be conducted  from August 1, 2018 to April 30, 2019 at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India.

This course is organised under the auspices of Center for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (CSSTEAP). So far 10 courses have been conducted and 109 participants from 16 countries in the Asia-Pacific region have benefited. In suitable cases this course leads to an M.Tech. degree on fulfillment of the requirements of the Andhra University.

JOB OPENING: Research Associate in Planetary Physics at Imperial College London, Application Deadline January 10, 2018.

This position will be based within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group to work with Professor Michele Dougherty.

The work is linked to the end of mission science for the Cassini magnetometer instrument, focusing on understanding Saturn’s internal and external magnetic field with particular emphasis on the data from the low altitude flybys in the final phase of the mission. The work will involve data analysis of magnetic field measurements, theoretical interpretation (some knowledge of MHD and dynamo theory) and modelling in order to achieve the science goals. A PhD or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience in physics or a closely related area, together with experience in at least one or preferably two or more of: space or planetary physics; dynamo theory and planetary interiors; time series data analysis; generalised inversion techniques is essential.
