ICS13 Abstracts

From: Jimmy Raeder (J.Raeder at unh.edu)

Although the abstract submission deadline has passed, we continue to accept abstracts at ics13.unh.edu until one week before the meeting, i.e., September 22. We especially encourage abstracts presenting new MMS results, and we will leave a few oral slots open for the latest MMS results. However, the later an abstract is submitted, the larger the chance it will be assigned to the Wednesday poster session.

SESSION: SHINE 2017 Session “What are the Energy Partition and Dominant Energy Transport Mechanisms Associated with Magnetic Reconnection for Different Heliospheric Plasmas?”: Call for Abstracts

From: Maria Kazachenko, Benjamin Lynch, Nick Murphy, Lucas Tarr, Silvina Guidoni (kazachenko at ssl.berkeley.edu)

http://shinecon.org/shine2017/session2017.php#session10

We would like to draw your attention to the session “What are the Energy Partition and Dominant Energy Transport Mechanisms Associated with Magnetic Reconnection for Different Heliospheric Plasmas?” to be held at this year’s SHINE Workshop (shinecon.org/CurrentMeeting.php, Saint-Sauveur, Quebec, Canada, July 24-28, 2017).

This session aims to bring the solar, in situ, and laboratory heliophysics communities together to discuss the energy partition during magnetic reconnection. Questions of particular interest include:

-- How well does the energy partition predicted by current theory and simulations (particle and fluid) compare to observations? What are the observational signatures of various energy transport mechanisms?

-- How does the energy partition change with time during a reconnection event, as energy is transported outward from the reconnection region?

-- Are the dominant energy transport mechanisms similar throughout the heliosphere, or do different processes dominate in the coronal, laboratory, or magnetospheric environment?

We welcome poster presentations as well as participation in the discussion (Wednesday morning, July 26). Our invited scene-setting speakers will provide reviews on observations and theory and also guide the open discussion, which is expected (and indeed hoped) to be the central part of the session. Those who wish to make (or refute) a particular point may bring one slide that can be quickly put up on the main projector, if relevant to the ongoing discussion.

Poster presentations will be on display during the whole week. The abstract deadline for poster presentations is June 23rd. We encourage your participation and hope that you will share this announcement with colleagues.

Conveners: Maria Kazachenko, Benjamin Lynch, Nick Murphy, Lucas Tarr, Silvina Guidoni

Planetary and Space Sciences (PSS) Special Issue Invitation: Dust, Atmosphere, and Plasma Environment of the Moon and Small Bodies

From: Mihaly Horanyi (horanyi at colorado.edu)

The DAP – 2017 workshop was held in Boulder on January 11th-13th. It was focused on open science questions, the status and future of our supporting modeling and laboratory experimental capabilities, and the definition of the required measurements and instrument capabilities for future investigations from orbit or landed missions. Contributions to the earlier LDAP-2010 and DAP-2012 meetings were published in special issues of Planetary and Space Sciences.

A similar volume is planned to report the contributions to DAP-2017. In addition to the meeting participants, the editors are soliciting contributed papers from the larger lunar, planetary, and space science communities that are relevant to the topics discussed during the DAP-2017 meeting.

The deadline for submitting a paper to this special issue is June 30, 2017.

Mihaly Horanyi and Alan Stern, editors

RHESSI Science Nugget No. 302

From: Hugh Hudson (hhudson at ssl.berkeley.edu)

“The Solar X-ray Limb III”, by Marina Battaglia and Gordon Hurford. RHESSI succeeds with an entirely new way to measure the solar diameter.

See
http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/wiki/index.php/RHESSI_Science_Nuggets

listing the current series, 2008-present, and

http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/nuggets/

for the original series, 2005-2008.

We publish these at roughly two-week intervals and welcome contributions,
which should be related, at least loosely, to RHESSI science.

JOB OPENING: ESA Research Fellowships in Space Science

From: Oliver Jennrich (fellowship at cosmos.esa.int)

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year.

The aim of these fellowships is to provide young scientists, holding a PhD
or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing space science
research in fields related to the ESA Science Programmes.

Areas of research include planetary science, astronomy and
astrophysics, solar and solar-terrestrial science, plasma physics and
fundamental physics. The fellowships have a duration of two years, with the
possible extension to three years, and are
tenable at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in
Noordwijk, Netherlands, or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in
Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain.

Applications are now solicited for fellowships in space science to begin in
the fall of 2018. Preference will be given to applications submitted by
candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Candidates not holding
a PhD yet are encouraged to apply, but they must provide evidence of
receiving their degree before starting the fellowship.

ESA fellows are enrolled in ESA's Social Security Scheme, which covers
medical expenses. A monthly deduction covers these short-term and long-term risks.

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2017.

More information on the ESA Research Fellowship programme in Space Science,
on the conditions and eligibility, as well as the application form can retrieved from
http://cosmos.esa.int/fellowship

Questions on the scientific aspects of the
ESA Fellowship in Space Science not answered in the above pages can be sent
by e-mail to the fellowship coordinators, Dr. Oliver Jennrich or Dr. Bruno
Altieri at the address fellowship at cosmos.esa.int
