MEETING: Comet Formation Paradigm After Rosetta. What is the Hallmark of Cometary Nuclei Formation in Protoplanetary Discs Inherited from Rosetta? June 19-23, 2017, Sofia, Bulgaria

From: Maria Teresa Capria, Tanyu Bonev, Stavro L. Ivanovski (stavro.ivanovski at iaps.inaf.it)

We are pleased to announce the international workshop

“Comet formation paradigm after Rosetta. What is the hallmark of cometary
nuclei formation in protoplanetary discs inherited from Rosetta?”

that will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 19-23 June, 2017. The format will consist of plenary sessions with contributed and invited presentations. Registration and abstracts submission are now open. All the necessary information can be found on the conference website:

http://www.astro.bas.bg/comets2017

Important dates:
February 28 - April 25: abstract submission
May 3: notification of acceptance

The workshop is organized by the Institute for Space Astrophysics and Planetology (IAPS), National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Italy, the Institute of Astronomy and National Astronomical Observatory(IANAO), Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), and is partially funded by Europlanet 2020 Research Infrastructure(RI).

The workshop is one of the main post-Rosetta scientific forums in 2017.

The Rosetta findings have already brought cometary science to a new level. The interpretation of the acquired data is driving a large scale revision of our understanding of comet formation and is also leading us to reconsider some of the established concepts related to the formation and evolution of the Solar System. Moreover, this has broader implications as comet composition and formation encompasses astrophysics, astrochemistry and astrobiology. This workshop aims to gather the scientific community interested in various aspects of cometary science together with experts in planetary formation. The main focus will be to discuss the state-of-the-art cometary nuclei formation paradigm taking into account the recent information coming from observation, laboratory investigations and modelling results, and identifying new scientific goals for the post-Rosetta era. The meeting will provide a unique and timely forum for a discussion on our understanding of the role of the comets in the Solar System formation and evolution.

To ask for questions please send an email to mariateresa.capria at iaps.inaf.it. Please also distribute this announcement to any of your colleagues who might be interested in this meeting.

From: Michael von Papen, Joachim Saur (m.papen at uni-koeln.de)

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: *Numerical techniques in MHD simulations*
    August 16-18, 2017, Cologne, Germany
    http://complexsystems.uni-koeln.de/mhd2017.html
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS (DEADLINE June 1)

*Abstract*
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are an important tool to better understand the complex physics of astrophysical and geophysical plasma flows. As the frontiers are constantly pushed towards more accurate, faster and higher resolved simulations new mathematical approaches are needed to meet these goals. Therefore, the conference Numerical Techniques in MHD Simulations (MHD-SIM) focuses on recent developments of numerical techniques, models, and algorithms to address challenging science questions in computational space and astrophysics. Our conference covers various approaches to describe plasmas as a fluid, i.e., single fluid, multi-fluid and Hall-MHD approaches. The aim is to bring together researchers of several fields, such as applied mathematics, computer science, space science and astrophysics, in order to foster interdisciplinary discussions and to stimulate potential future collaborations.

2017 Space Weather REDI Summer Bootcamp

From: Yihua Zheng (yihua.zheng at nasa.gov)

This summer (June 6-16), take advantage of a unique free opportunity to explore the burgeoning field of space weather by joining the Space Weather REDI summer Bootcamp. Bootcamp, to be held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, includes two weeks of space weather tutorials led by the NASA GSFC scientists:

The first week acquaints participants with the applications of space weather. These lectures will provide a basic knowledge of space weather and forecasting, without going into detailed physics. This week is geared at an undergraduate level, but woud also be appropriate for others who are interested in broadening their space weather knowledge - such as graduate students, scientists, engineers, educators, mission operators, and competitive high school students.
To learn more about the first week of the bootcamp see Bootcamp 2016 Tutorials

The second week is split into two tracks and will offer:
Track A: Focused space weather forecaster training (hands-on). Appropriate for those who will be doing space weather forecasting.
Track B: Research topics discussion + How to use CCMC tools in your research. Appropriate for research undergraduate and graduate students interested in learning more about how to use tools and models at the CCMC in their research. There will be opportunities for students to discuss their research topics and consult CCMC staff scientists and guest NASA GSFC HSD scientists including Dean Pesnell, Nick Arge, Vadim Uritsky, Yi-Hsin Liu, Bob Robinson, Jeff Klenzing and Vladimir Airapetian.
Note: You can attend both or one week of bootcamp, or even selected days, although the latter is discouraged. During week 2 you can attend either Track A or Track B, not both.

If interested, register to attend the Bootcamp:
