Reminder: Juno Participating Scientist Program Step-1 Due Date
From: Jared Leisner (jared.s.leisner at nasa.gov)
NASA Heliophysics Division is collaborating with the Planetary Science Division on the Juno Participating Scientist Program (PSP). This competition will add science team members to the Juno mission, currently orbiting Jupiter. The Heliophysics Division strongly encourages the proposal of projects that adapt capabilities, studies, and insights developed at Earth for application at Jupiter.
These projects may be Jupiter-specific or leverage other mission data sets for comparative planetology studies. NASA anticipates proposals on the ITM system, the magnetosphere, and other studies that involve innovative uses of the Juno instrument payload.
The Step-1 due date for this program is March 1, 2018. As this program is being managed primarily by the Planetary Science Division, the rules in C.1 will apply to the solicitation, unless otherwise noted. One significant difference between Heliophysics and Planetary Science ROSES solicitations is the ability to add Co-Is between Steps 1 and 2 (see C.1, Planetary Science Research Overview, Section 2).
The Juno PSP solicitation, as well as a Proposal Information Package that summarizes the mission, may be found on NSPIRES: https://nspires.nasaprs.com/external/solicitations/summary!init.do?solId={AC1C72D9-A51A-BEC5-A96E-F57DE7844446}&path=open
Any questions about the solicitation may be sent to Jared Leisner, Heliophysics Division, at the email address in the solicitation.

Award of Cooperative Agreement for Management and Operations of Arecibo Observatory
From: Michael Wiltberger (mwiltber at nsf.gov)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is pleased to announce that beginning Feb. 22, the University of Central Florida (UCF) will start formal transition activities to take on the operations and management of NSF's Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. NSF is currently negotiating the operations and management award with UCF.
With this award, UCF will fulfill NSF's preferred alternative for management and operations of the observatory. The university will take over formal management and execute a program of research and education consistent with the objectives and priorities of the scientific community. The university will provide support and technical personnel to manage the observatory, its research and educational activities.
The award duration is expected to run five years, with NSF contributions decreasing over time from the current level of approximately $8 million per year to approximately $2 million per year by the second half of Fiscal Year (FY) 2022.
This award ensures continued science-focused operations that maintain atmospheric, planetary and astronomical research, including radio observations of astronomical sources, planetary radar observations of solar system and near-Earth objects, and studies of Earth's atmosphere.

Family Care Grants Available for 2018 TESS Meeting
From: Holly Gilbert (holly.r.gilbert at nasa.gov)
The SPD Executive Committee, along with the AAS, are committed to helping SPD members and SPD affiliate members with young children attend the TESS meeting.
SPD childcare grant applications for up to $400 are available for and are due by Monday, March 30, 2018 at 7 P.M. (EST): https://spd.aas.org/family-care-grants
The grant recipient will be responsible for arranging the childcare; the grants are intended to offset the cost of this childcare. We anticipate awarding up to eight grants of up to $400 each to offset childcare costs. This might include babysitting costs at the hotel, or contributions towards the daily expenses of a spouse/relative attending the meeting to care for the child. The recipient needs to supply a receipt or other proof of payment to obtain the reimbursement.
Applications will be processed in the order received. Please send questions to treasurer at spd.aas.org

MEETING: HEPPA-SOLARIS 2018 Workshop - 2nd Announcement
From: Brentha Thurairajah (brenthat at vt.edu)
We welcome you to attend the 7th International HEPPA-SOLARIS 2018 Workshop (http://www.cpe.vt.edu/heppa.solaris.2018/), which will be held June 11-15, 2018 in Roanoke, Virginia, USA. The workshop will focus on observational and modeling studies of the inuences of solar radiation (SR) and energetic particle precipitation (EPP) on the atmosphere and climate. The workshop format includes plenary sessions with both invited and contributed talks, as well as poster sessions.
Session topics include:
1. Solar and precipitating particle variability
2. Solar photon and particle effects on the stratosphere and above
3. Dynamical processes influencing the coupling of altitude regions
4. Solar and particle effects on the troposphere and climate system including atmosphere and ocean-atmosphere coupling
5. Tools for assessing solar and precipitating particle influences, including measurements, models, and techniques
** Abstract submission for contributed presentations opens 1 March 2018.
http://www.cpe.vt.edu/heppa.solaris.2018/abstracts.html.
** Self-nominations of invited presentations are due by 16 March 2018.
In addition to contributed talks and posters, we solicit ‘self-nominated’ invited talks on HEPPA-SOLARIS related work that is new, timely, creative and/or controversial. To be considered for an invited talk, please submit an abstract for a contributed talk, and also send a summary of your work to Dr. Scott Bailey (baileys at vt.edu) before 16 March 2018. We encourage self-nominations from scientists at all levels, from students to senior scientists.
Self-nominations will be reviewed by the HEPPA-SOLARIS Science Organizing Committee, and all who submit self-nominations will be notified of the decision by 15 April. If your work is chosen for an invited talk, you will be sent an official invitation and your contributed abstract will be converted to an invited abstract.

RHESSI Nuggets in February 2018
From: Hugh Hudson (hhudson at ssl.berkeley.edu)
No. 316, "Joint MinXSS and RHESSI Flare X-ray Spectra between 1 and 15 keV", by Chris Moore, Brian Dennis, and the MinXSS Science Team. MinXSS adds systematic views of flare soft X-ray spectra to RHESSI imagery.
No. 317, "Non-Maxwellian Diagnostics from SDO/EVE spectra of an X-class flare," by Jaroslav Dudik. Ratios of high-excitation ion lines can readily detect kappa distributions in flare plasmas.
See
http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/wiki/index.php/RHESSI_Science_Nuggets listing the current series, 2008-present, and http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/nuggets/ for the original series, 2005-2008.
We publish these at roughly two-week intervals and welcome contributions, chriwhich should be related, at least loosely, to RHESSI science.
