It is with great sadness that we report the sudden, unexpected death on June 27 of our colleague, Chris Gurgiolo. Chris died doing one of the things he most loved, hiking near his home in Hamilton, Montana. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Chris is survived by his wife, Margie, six children, and seven grandchildren. Chris got his PhD from the University of Washington in 1980. A focus of his research throughout his career has been studying properties of ions and electrons near Earth’s bow shock. He worked with data from the DE, IMAGE, WIND and Cluster missions. Chris’ creativity led to the development of many software tools that have been used extensively in the analysis of those data. Using data from the PEACE thermal electron detectors and other instruments on the four Cluster spacecraft, he characterized various properties of the in-situ plasma turbulence in the solar wind and upstream of Earth’s bow shock. Most recently, he had been investigating the evolution of the solar wind electron strahl as it encountered and was reflected from the bow shock. Chris was an imaginative scientist and his scientific insights and friendship will be sorely missed.
