SPA Bowie Lectures Nominations due June 1

From: Christina Cohen (cohen at srl.caltech.edu)

Dear Colleagues,

The deadline for submitting nominations for this year's SPA Bowie lectures is June 1. At the 2020 Fall Meeting, the Van Allen lecture and the Nicolet lecture will be given which honor Space Scientists who have made significant contributions in the fields of Magnetospheric science and Aeronomy, respectively.

Please draft a one page (or less) nomination letter supporting a deserving colleague, briefly describing their accomplishments, contributions to our community and why they would deliver an exciting lecture to the broad SPA audience. The letter should be sent to either Christina Cohen (cohen at srl.caltech.edu) or Geoff Reeves (geoff at reevesresearch.org) by Monday, June 1, 2020.

Thank you for your contributions,
Christina and Geoff

CALL FOR PAPERS: “Solar and Heliospheric Plasma Structures: Waves, Turbulence, and Dissipation” in JGR - Space Physics

From: Leon Ofman (ofman at cua.edu)

Call for Papers for “Solar and Heliospheric Plasma Structures: Waves, Turbulence, and Dissipation” in JGR: Space Physics
Submission Open: 20 April 2020
Submission Deadline: 31 December 2020

Special Section Organizers:
Leon Ofman, Catholic University of America/NASA GSFC
Shreekrishna Tripathi, UCLA

The aim of the special section is to present an overview of the current status of the field of waves, turbulence, and dissipation in solar and heliospheric plasma structures, that combines, theory, modeling, spacecraft observations (such as STEREO, Wind, ACE, Helios, Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter), ground based observations, and laboratory experiments. Leading experts in the field have convened at 2017 AGU meeting and presented invited and contributed talks to the broad AGU community reflecting the current status and progress of knowledge in the field. The special section will contain contributions from a number of these experts, each in individual review paper, thus providing invaluable new reference on this topic in the field.

Papers on related topics are solicited from the general research community. Manuscripts should be submitted through the GEMS site for JGR-Space Physics and select the collection’s title from the drop down menu in the Special Section field of the submission form.

The Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University, invites applications from female researchers for one professor or associate professor position during the Japanese fiscal years, April 2020–March 2025. The application deadline is extended to Thursday, May 28, 2020, 12:00 (Japanese Standard Time).

ISEE has seven research divisions: 1) integrated studies, 2) cosmic ray research, 3) heliospheric research, 4) ionospheric and magnetospheric research, 5) meteorological and atmospheric research, 6) land–ocean ecosystem research, and 7) chronological research. It has four interdisciplinary research projects: a) solar–terrestrial climate research, b) space–Earth environmental prediction, c) interaction of neutral and plasma atmospheres, and d) aerosol and cloud formation. The successful candidate is expected to conduct researches related to at least one of these seven divisions, and is welcomed to join these interdisciplinary research projects. The candidate also belongs to the Center for International Collaborative Research (CICR) of ISEE which promotes various international collaborative researches to understand physical mechanisms occurring in space, sun, and earth systems. In the CICR, the candidate is expected to take a lead to develop ISEE as an international joint research center (i) by hosting international collaborative researches, (ii) by hosting international meetings, (iii) by promoting the exchange of researchers between ISEE and foreign institutions, and (iv) by organizing capacity-building schools for students and young scientists. The candidate is also expected to teach classes for graduate and/or undergraduate courses in English, and to supervise some graduate and/or undergraduate students in the relevant research division. Applications from any country are welcomed.

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Position in Computational Plasma Physics at the Los Alamos National Laboratory

From: Gian Luca Delzanno (delzanno at lanl.gov)

The T-5 Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group of the Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening for a postdoctoral position in computational plasma physics. The position is on the development of spectral methods for the kinetic equations, targeting problems that requires coupling microscopic physics in large-scale simulations.

The current applications are primarily in space physics, and include:
- The development of new numerical methods for global magnetospheric modeling that treat the microscopic physics accurately
- The development of new modeling frameworks for radiation belt remediation based on artificial injection of electromagnetic waves to reduce the fluxes of hazardous MeV electrons via wave-particle interaction physics
- The interaction of spacecraft with magnetized plasmas, specifically on spacecraft charging mitigation and on inverse spacecraft-charging calculations for data interpretation from various space missions

These projects are supported by collaborations within T-5 (involving statisticians, applied mathematicians and physicists), with other groups at Los Alamos (in particular the Intelligence and Space Research and the Accelerator Operations and Technology divisions), and with other groups within the US and internationally.

Notes to Applicants:
- For full consideration, please submit (A) a cover letter describing background and relevant experience, (B) a full resume, and (C) contact information for three professional references. This appointment is valid for two years with a possible third year extension. Note that US citizenship is not a requirement.
- Only applications received through the LANL website will be considered. Please go to

Postdoctoral or Guest Scientist positions in space physics (ref nr: 2.2.1-137/20)
Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Uppsala invited applications for positions in the field of space plasma physics. The topics of the respective positions are the following:

Investigation of electron dynamics in a cometary ionosphere. The work involves analysis of Rosetta data at comet 67P.
Particle energization by collisionless shocks at electron scales. The work involves analysis of data from Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission at the Earth’s bow shock.
Experience in the analysis of space plasma data is expected, and experience in relevant theoretical modelling is an advantage.

Our team performs observations, data analysis and modelling of space plasma processes (www.space.irfu.se). The team has decades of experience in developing and operating instruments to measure electric fields, plasma temperature, density and density fluctuations for spacecraft missions (e.g. Rosetta, MMS, Cluster, Solar Orbiter, Swarm, Cassini).

The positions are available at the Uppsala office of IRF, located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, for 2 years. The positions are funded by grants from the Swedish National Space Agency.

The postdoc candidates should have completed a PhD during 2017 or later. However, if the candidate has an older degree and wants to refer to special circumstances, such as parental leave, this should be clearly stated.

Candidates planning to obtain their PhD degree no later than September 2020 can also apply. Guest scientist candidates should have a PhD degree.

The candidate should not currently be an active researcher at IRF in Uppsala or in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University. Candidates should be able to start the work during autumn 2020.

Applications should include a CV, a short letter stating research interests and relevant experience, copies of undergraduate and PhD degree certificates (or a letter from the supervisor stating when the PhD degree is expected), description and proof of previous postdoctoral positions and/or similar relevant research work (if available), names and contact information for two professional references and reprints of not more than 4 selected publications.
