WHPI "Show and Tell" Tutorials

The first Whole Heliosphere and Planetary Interactions (WHPI) "Show and Tell" days will occur between 8:00 - 11:30 AM (Pacific Time) on Monday-Tuesday September 14th-15th, 2020. These will feature approximately 15 minute pre-recorded tutorials on WHPI related observations, followed by live Q&A with presenters.

Presentations include Parker Solar Probe, Solar Irradiance, GOLD, MLSO, BBSO, Jicamarca, Solar Orbiter, Locarno Solar Observatory, Historical Data Sets, Millstone Hill ISR, AMISR, and Extended Owens Valley Solar Array.

We are planning future Show and Tell days to highlight more observations, as well as modeling and analysis techniques -- check the WHPI Show and Tell web page (https://whpi.hao.ucar.edu/whpi_showandtell.php) for further information. Note that all talks will remain available on our web page as a library of tutorials that can be accessed at any time.

JOB OPENING: Program Director for Geospace Facilities at NSF - Deadline Extended

The Geospace Section in NSF’s Division of Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences has a vacancy in the position of Program Director for Geospace Facilities.    
We are looking for an experienced upper atmosphere scientist with a flair for scientific leadership and an interest in community service, who is excited about the opportunity to work with us to manage a diverse set of facilities and shape the investment in geospace science at NSF.  In return, the position offers a unique chance to experience the inner workings of federal research programs and to influence the geospace research priorities at the NSF.  A starting date around October 15, 2020 would be ideal but a later date can also be arranged.

JOB OPENING: Physical Scientist/ZP-1301-5/ NOAA NESDIS Office of Projects, Planning, and Analysis (OPPA)/Silver Spring, MD

NOAA is seeking a Project Scientist for the Space Weather Follow-On at L1 (SWFO-L1) Project. The SWFO-L1  project has selected a spacecraft and instrument complement and is on schedule for launch in 2024. It will provide continuity for the critical space weather observations of coronal imaging and in-situ solar wind parameters. The program scientist will be a senior leader of the joint NOAA/NASA flight project with global prominence and impact and have the primary responsibility to coordinate instrument and algorithm science efforts to ensure effectiveness of the observations to meet NOAA's mission to issue products and services that respond to user needs to protect life and  property from the effects of space weather. 

The SWFO-L1 Project Scientist will perform the following duties:
-- Act as the Project Scientist for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Follow-On (SWFO) mission and advocate for NOAA on space weather issues and policies.
-- Chair the SWFO Algorithm Working Group and Product Team(s) and oversee operational space weather product definition and development.
-- Ensure SWFO and future space weather instruments, missions and products fulfill NOAA space weather requirements.
-- Interface with the user, and science community including, National Weather Service (NWS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and other stakeholders to ensure NOAA space weather products support user and stakeholder needs.
-- Define and oversee verification and validation campaigns for space weather instrument Integration and Test (I&T) as well as Post-launch Test and on-orbit calibration (Cal/Val).

This position will report to NOAA’s Office of Projects, Planning, and Analysis.

JOB OPENING: Scientific Analyst and Programmer at the University of Colorado/NOAA in Boulder, CO

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder has an immediate opening for a Scientific Analyst and Programmer for work supporting the suite of space weather instruments onboard the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Series-R (GOES-R) and Space Weather Follow-On (SWFO) missions. The position is located at the David Skaggs Research Center in Boulder, CO.

The successful candidate will work with the space weather team in NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). Members of this team support NOAA’s space weather mission and ensure the operational and scientific utility of NOAA’s space environment data. The candidate will develop software to analyze instrument performance and build space weather data products that contribute to the overall success of the GOES-R and SWFO missions. They may also assist with software development for real-time or retrospective data processing, as well as support NCEI’s new initiative to develop Artificial Intelligence solutions to space weather data analysis challenges. 

Applicants for this position must have at least an undergraduate degree in computer science, space science, astrophysics, or equivalent; as well as demonstrable scientific software development and scientific data analysis experience. The successful applicant will receive competitive compensation and the University’s excellent benefits package.
