Passing of Igor Veselovsky

From: Vladimir Kalegaev (klg at dec1.sinp.msu.ru)

It is with great sorrow that we, his friends and colleagues, announce the passing of Igor Veselovsky. Igor died of a cerebral stroke combined with covid-19 infection, on December 30, 2020 at the age of 80 years old.

Igor Stanislavovich Veselovsky is a veteran of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Moscow State University, who worked at the Institute for 54 years. He was a doctor of physics and mathematics, a professor. He was a prominent specialist in the field of plasma physics. His research interests were wide: space plasma physics, astrophysics, theoretical physics, nuclear physics, solar physics, heliosphere physics, solar-terrestrial physics, biophysics. The most important results relate to the theory of recombination of electrons and ions in partially ionized plasma, to the kinetic theory of dynamic plasma processes in the solar atmosphere and solar wind, to theoretical modeling of the interplanetary magnetic field, and the development of methods of dimensionless scale analysis in space plasma.

I.S. Veselovsky graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He is a PhD since 1970, Doctor of Science since 1985. He led his teaching work and gave lecture courses on the chair of Space physics, Department of Physics, Moscow State University. He supervised the work of students, graduate and postgraduate students. He was author of the textbook “Physics of Interplanetary and Near-Earth Space” (two editions, the last one in 2010).

I.S. Veselovsky is the author of numerous high-level scientific publications: 2 books, about 200 articles. Throughout his scientific life, I.S. Veselovsky actively collaborated with scientists from many scientific centers both in the USSR and the Russian Federation, and abroad.

I.S. Veselovsky was a member of a number of scientific councils in different institutions in Moscow. He was a co-chairman of the section “Solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field” of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (1991-1999). He was a member of the National Commission on Geomagnetism and Aeronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research, Space Physics of the American Geophysical Union (1994-1995).

The memory of Igor Stanislavovich Veselovsky, a prominent scientist and a remarkable person, will forever remain in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to work with him or just communicate.

Igor is survived by his wife Marfa, and his son Alexey.
