Magnetosphere Online Seminar Series

On Monday November 22, Minna Palmroth will give a presentation on Vlasiator: Global Ion-Kinetic Modeling of the Near-Earth Space in 6D.

The following week on November 29, Surjalal Sharma is scheduled to present on Data-Driven Modeling of the Magnetosphere: The Complex Systems Perspective.

We continue online discussions about physics of the outer heliosphere and local interstellar medium and white paper preparation for the upcoming Heliophysics Decadal. JOB OPENING: Seeking a New Assist. Prof. in Space Physics at BU Astronomy

The Department of Astronomy at Boston University (http://www.bu.edu/astronomy/) seeks applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position to begin on July 1, 2022. The successful candidate will be an early-career scientist who will lead a robust research program to become affiliated with the Center for Space Physics (CSP; http://www.bu.edu/csp/) and participate fully in the department’s teaching missions at introductory, majors, and graduate levels. Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, or a related field, with postdoctoral experience expected. Applications will be considered from all areas of Space Physics in Earth, planetary, and heliospheric regions. Space Physics big data endeavors may benefit from the Boston University Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering (https://www.bu.edu/hic/). In addition to this position, the Department expects to search for additional faculty members over the next five years.

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Research Associate Position at University of Arizona, Dept. of Planetary Sciences and Lunar & Planetary Lab

The Department of Planetary Sciences/Lunar & Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the field of space physics/astrophysics. The successful applicant will work in collaboration with Dr. Federico Fraschetti and Joe Giacalone. The department has an active research program in plasma astrophysics, heliophysics and theoretical astrophysics. The primary work is expected to be theoretical and computational. The study encompasses a wide range of topics relating in particular to modelling energetic particles transport within switchbacks and Parker Solar Probe recent findings.

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Theoretical and Computational Space Plasma Physics

The Space Science Institute (SSI) invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Research Scientist in computational and theoretical plasma physics. The selected candidate will take a leading role in one of several ongoing research efforts that include modeling of collisionless shocks in multi-component space and astrophysical plasmas, physics of collisioness plasma turbulence and plasma micro-instabilities, and development of advanced numerical methods for modeling of kinetic behavior of plasmas.  The initial appointment is for 18 months, renewable for up to 3 years upon satisfactory performance and continued availability of funds.  Remote work is an option.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in space plasma physics or related fields is required prior to the start date of the position. Applicants should demonstrate the potential to publish high-quality research results in peer-reviewed journals, good communication skills, excellent work ethic, and the ability to work independently. Experience with numerical methods, high-performance computing, and/or strong background in plasma theory are highly desirable. Strong candidates with background in related areas of physics or applied math will be considered.
