MEETING: The 5th ISEE Symposium: Toward the Future of Space-Earth Environmental Research

From: Kanya Kusano (kusano at nagoya-u.jp)

The Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University, will hold "The 5th ISEE Symposium: Toward the Future of Space–Earth Environmental Research" from the 15th to 17th of November 2022 in a hybrid manner. This symposium aims to discuss the current status and prospect of space–Earth environmental research from an interdisciplinary view.

The symposium consists of six topical sessions and panel discussions for the future of space-Earth environmental research. We also accept contributed presentations. Please visit the website for details of this symposium, including the registration.

Special Issue of Frontiers on “Solved and Unsolved Problems”

From: Joe Borovsky (jborovsky at spacescience.org)

This is a call for Perspective articles, Opinion articles, Reviews, etc. for a new special issue of Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Science on “Solved and Unsolved Problems in Space Physics”
https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/43676/

We invite the submissions of critical, ambitious, and courageous contributions that can provide new insights and stimulate a scientific debate around the present and future status of Space Physics. The authors are challenged to address the following questions:
• Are there any solved problems in space physics?
• Are there problems that the community thinks are solved, but are not?
• What are the outstanding issues in space physics?
• In particular, what are the neglected outstanding issues in space physics?

The nominal submission deadline in November 11. Contact the Editor at jborovsky at spacesciene.org for any questions.

SOHO CELIAS-PM, CELIAS-SEM, COSTEP-EPHIN, and ERNE Data Converted to CDFs at NASA's Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF)

From: Robert Candey (robert.m.candey at nasa.gov)

New SOHO CELIAS-PM, CELIAS-SEM, COSTEP-EPHIN, and ERNE CDF datasets have been archived at NASA's Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF https://spdf.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/data/soho) and are available through CDAWeb (https://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov) and its data access methods (https://cdaweb.gsfc.nasa.gov/alternative_access_methods.html). The CDF datasets were created from the ASCII datasets at https://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/archive.html (for CELIAS-PM, CELIAS-SEM, and COSTEP-EPHIN) and https://srl.utu.fi/export/ (for ERNE), and they cover the period from the beginning of the mission and will continue to be updated. Please note that the new CELIAS-PM ASCII datasets at https://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/archive.html and the current (version 2) CELIAS-PM CDF datasets were recently fully reprocessed. Thank you to Andriy Koval for curating these data.

JOB OPENING: Research Scientist at Goddard

From: Jared Espley (Jared.R.Espley at nasa.gov)

The Science & Exploration Directorate, Solar System Exploration Division, Planetary Magnetospheres Laboratory (Code 695) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking a planetary scientist with a focus on magnetic field observations. The successful candidate will join the Goddard Mag Group to lead data analysis from space flight missions using data from magnetometers and associated instruments. Expertise is required in either space plasma physics and/or solid body geophysics using magnetic field observations from any body in the Solar System ("If it has a magnetic field, we want to measure it."). The successful candidate will also lead teams to develop new missions, define their measurement requirements, and work with Mag Group engineers to develop and build the appropriate magnetic field instruments.

A full vacancy announcement will be posted around Aug 23, 2022 to: https://www.usajobs.gov/ and remain open for five business days. The short period that the announcement is open is due to the type of hiring authority, and is not a reflection of the openness of the position. This is a GS- 13/14 level position (US citizens only) located at NASA-Goddard in Greenbelt, Maryland near Washington, DC.

For additional information contact: Dr. Jared Espley, Jared.R.Espley at nasa.gov

RHESSI Nuggets in July 2022

From: Hugh Hudson (hugh.hudson at glasgow.ac.uk)

http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/wiki/index.php/RHESSI_Science_Nuggets

No. 432, “Undetected Minority-polarity Flux, Moss, and Coronal Heating,” by Yi-Ming WANG. There’s plenty of room in “unipolar” active regions for both polarities, and there is good evidence for them.

No. 433, “Fast Prograte Flows in Solar Active Regions,” by Hugh HUDSON. Unexpected, unpredicted, and not modeled yet - weird flows in hot active-region loops.

We welcome contributions to the RHESSI Nuggets, and the topics may wander some distance away from specifically RHESSI results if they are generally interesting. See http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~tohban/wiki/index.php/RHESSI_Science_Nuggets for these and others. Comments about specific flares can often be found by searching for their SOLyyyy-mm-dd identifier from this home page.
