MEETING: TESS Meeting Call for Abstracts

From: Dale Gary, TESS SOC (dgary at njit.edu)

The Triennial Earth-Sun Summit (TESS, https://aas.org/meetings/tess2022) is a joint meeting of AAS/SPD and AGU/SPA, being held 8-11 August in Bellevue/Seattle, WA to encourage cross-disciplinary interaction between researchers in solar, space, and terrestrial fields of science.

The abstract submission site is open at https://submissions.mirasmart.com/TESS2022/Splash.aspx! Please submit your abstracts by Friday, 15 April to one of our special topic sessions listed at https://aas.org/meetings/tess2022/topical-sessions, or to one of the general categories: Solar, Heliosphere, Magnetosphere, Ionosphere/Thermosphere/Mesosphere, or Cross-Disciplinary.

Students please sign up for the poster contest. Studentships (https://solarnews.nso.edu/spd-studentships-for-the-2022-tess-meeting/) for travel to the meeting are available if you apply by Friday, 18 March. Registration will be announced shortly. We look forward to seeing everyone in person at the meeting.

MEETING: Beacon Satellite Symposium - Call for Abstracts

From: Patricia Doherty (patricia.doherty at bc.edu)

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the 21st International Beacon Satellite Symposium will be held at Boston College on 1-5 August 2022.

The Beacon Satellite Symposium is a triennial event organized by the Beacon Satellite Studies Group of URSI Commission G – an interdisciplinary group, servicing science, research applications and engineering aspects of satellite signals observed from the ground and in space. The Beacon Symposia provide distinctive opportunities for ionospheric scientists from all over the world to meet and collaborate on topics relevant to ionospheric effects on radio propagation.

Recent meetings of the Beacon Symposia have hosted between 125 and 200 people from over 40 countries. In our most recent meetings, we have seen an increase in the number of participants from developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America – presenting the Beacon Symposia with nearly worldwide coverage.

At this time, we invite you submit your abstracts with the link provided on the website. The abstract deadline is April 15, 2022. URSI has provided a link for us to utilize their Cvent system for abstract submissions and reviews.

Please view our website for information on registration, lodging and the scientific sessions. Registration links will be open soon on the website: www.bc.edu/bss2022.

It is our intent to assist travel and lodging costs for a limited number of young scientists and participants from developing countries. Awards will be made based on the quality of the abstract and financial need of the applicant. If you wish to request consideration of financial support, please send a note describing your request to bssrequest at bc.edu.

Please check our website at www.bc.edu/bss2022 for more information as it develops over the next couple of months. Please also register your interest in this event by pre-registering with your email address on our website. We sincerely hope to see you at BSS2022 in Boston.

Best regards,
Patricia Doherty, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA, USA
Andrzej Krankowski, University of Warmia and Mazury, Olsztyn, Poland
Bruno Nava, Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Positions in Outer Heliosphere Data Analysis and Instrumentation at Los Alamos National Laboratory

From: Dan Reisenfeld (dreisenfeld at lanl.gov)

The Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) seeks candidates for one or more postdoctoral positions in the observational study of Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs) and/or instrumentation development for future heliophysics missions.

The Space Science and Applications Group leads the IBEX-Hi instrument on the ongoing Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission and is leading two instruments for the upcoming Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission, which will launch in 2025. Our group has also recently lead instruments on the Van Allen Probes, ACE and TWINS missions, as well as plasma instruments deployed to space for verification of international nuclear treaties.

The successful candidates for these positions will be expected to carry out original research in the observational study of IBEX ENA data, and/or support the development and calibration of instrumentation for the IMAP mission and for other current and future NASA and National Security missions. Applicants should have experience in heliospheric science (magnetospheres, solar wind, outer heliosphere, etc.) and/or laboratory experience broadly applicable to developing hardware for the detection of space plasmas. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to interact with Laboratory scientists engaged in a broad range of observational, computational, and theoretical research in heliophysics.

These are two-year positions with the possibility of an extension to a third year. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Physics, Space Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, or a closely related field at the time of employment. Applicants should send their applications electronically (https://lanl.jobs, posting IRC100796) including a CV, a publication list, and statement of research interests. Applicants are encouraged to contact Dan Reisenfeld (dreisenfeld at lanl.gov) regarding the expectations of the positions, possible research topics, and other questions related to the application.

JOB OPENING: HAO Solar Physics Postdoctoral Fellow I

From: Matthias Rempel (rempel at ucar.edu)

Location: Boulder, CO.
Type: Full time, exempt.
Term: One-year term position with a review after the 1st year.
Application Deadline: This position will be posted until filled; applications received by Sunday March 27th will be given first consideration.
Relocation: Some relocation assistance is available.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Salary: $70,270

What you will do:
Work with both simulations and observations of the solar corona. On the simulation side, develop and test data-driven boundary conditions for the Max Planck University of Chicago Radiative MHD (MURaM) code with applications to simulations of the solar corona. Refine and further develop existing routines that use Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) observation derived electric fields and flow fields at the lower boundary of the simulation domain in order to drive simulations of quiet and active Sun coronae, including eruptive events. Simulations will be initially tested against existing simulations as a testbed and then applied to selected solar active regions. The simulations will be validated against Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) observations through forward synthesis of AIA emission. Assist in processing Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) observations of active regions in AIA data.
