MEETING: The 15th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-15) – Reminder for Abstract Submission (Deadline July 31, 2023)

From: Xu-Zhi Zhou (xuzhi.zhou at gmail.com)

Dear Colleagues,

The 15th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-15) will be held this year, from October 16-20, in Deqing (the scenic suburb of Hangzhou), China. The conference aims to bring together scientists from the magnetospheric, ionospheric, and planetary communities to review the recent discoveries in light of recent space missions and numerical simulations, and to discuss the current status and future direction of substorm research.

The meeting will be a hybrid meeting with online components. But we strongly encourage in-person participation, since the conference series are known for the atmosphere of lively discussions. We will start each day with a tutorial lecture on a specific topic, and we will provide sufficient time for questions and dialogues in each session.

Further information about the conference is given in the meeting website (http://ics15.cssr.org.cn/), and the deadline for abstract submission (July 31, 2023) is now approaching. Please kindly consider submitting your study of substorms to the conference, and we look forward to meeting you in China.

Xuzhi Zhou & Zuyin Pu
On behalf of the Scientific Organizing Committee of ICS-15

JOB OPENING: Project Scientist Space Weather Next L1 mission at NOAA/NESDIS

From: Irfan Azeem (irfan.azeem at noaa.gov)

NOAA's Office of Space Weather Observations has an opening for a Project Scientist for its planned Space Weather Next (SW Next) L1 mission. The selected candidate will provide overall scientific leadership for NOAA’s satellite missions to Lagrange 1 point currently being formulated. The SW Next 1 Project Scientist will serve as the project spokesperson with broad responsibilities including evaluating data product maturity, supporting/overseeing research initiatives, and maintaining liaison with U.S. and international agencies to coordinate efforts to maximize the scientific benefits of the SW Next L1 missions. The role will also serve as an interface to the user community, evaluating user needs and translating them to requirements, and leading efforts to ensure that users can effectively use space weather data from the missions. This is a US Government Civil Servant position, applicants are required to be US citizens and are expected to have applicable experience. A Ph.D. in Space Science or related subject is highly desirable. The vacancy announcement can be found at https://www.usajobs.gov/job/736143500 or on USAJOBS by searching for the vacancy number 736143500.

JOB OPENING: Job Opportunities at the University of Leicester, UK

From: Tim Yeoman (yxo at leicester.ac.uk)

Please note the job opportunities listed below. We would welcome applications from anyone interested

STFC-funded PDRA position within the University of Leicester School of Physics and Astronomy’s Planetary Science Group.

The primary research topic is the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interaction focusing on the distribution of magnetospheric plasma and the structure of ULF waves in the terrestrial radiation belts. This project will develop models of plasma mass density and Alfvén velocity and investigate their effects on the structure of the observed ULF wave fields, allowing us to quantify the role of ULF waves in the energisation and decay of the radiation belts.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Prof. Tim Yeoman, Head of Planetary Science Group on yxo at leicester.ac.uk.

The Institute for Space and Space Park Leicester independent research-focused Fellowships (3 posts)

The Fellowship holder’s research will focus on space or space-enabled research activities (e.g., remote sensing), instrumentation and/or space technology research, and would ideally be interdisciplinary in nature. The post holder can join one or more of the research groups (Planetary Science, Astrophysics, Space Projects and Instrumentation, Earth Observation Science) in the School of Physics and Astronomy, and/or a research group in the School of Geography Geology and the Environment, and/or elsewhere within the University of Leicester research structures which best supports their interdisciplinary activity. The post holder will be primarily affiliated with the newly formed Institute for Space, and will make significant contributions to the delivery of the high-quality space-focused research programme which cross-cuts the aforementioned entities. One of the independent research fellowships is reserved to focus on the instrumentation and geochemistry-focused science return of the University of Leicester built Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer on the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury.
