MEETING: UK Space Weather & Space Environment Meeting I: Transitioning from the SWIMMR Space-Weather Programme -- Abstract Extension, Registration Opening, and Venue Change

From: Mario M. Bisi (Mario.Bisi at stfc.ac.uk)

Dear Colleagues.

Registration is now open for our upcoming “UK Space Weather & Space Environment Meeting I: Transitioning from the SWIMMR Space-Weather Programme” with an early-bird deadline of 10 July 2023 before the prices increase in stages until registration closes on 04 September 2023. In addition, we are extending the abstract-submission deadline to 22:59:59UT/23:59:59BST on Friday 23 June 2023 – this is the only extension so please ensure you submit by this new deadline. You are able to submit more than one abstract if you wish.

Please also note that due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to change the venue to the Leonardo Hotel Cardiff, Wales, UK, but the meetings dates remain the same: 12-15 September 2023.

Please see: https://iop.eventsair.com/ukswse2023/ for all meeting details including the abstract submissions, registration, and venue details.

This is the first UK-focussed meeting and is timed as such to coincide with the latter part of the SWIMMR (Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk) Programme (see: https://www.ralspace.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/SWIMMR.aspx) building off the previous successful SWIMMR Symposia meetings as well as the UK’s hosting of ESWW2021 in Glasgow. This will be the start of an international meeting series with a UK core.

A reminder of the categorised/themed abstract-submission options are as follows:
- SWIMMR
- Instrumentation
- Industry and Users
- Policy and Strategy
- Space Weather Science, Modelling, and Forecasting
- Space Sustainability
- Space Domain Awareness (SST, SSA, Space Environment)
- Other
The “Other” category is for any other aspect of the space environment (space weather, space safety, SSA, engineering, forecasting, science, education, outreach, etc…) that you feel does not fall into the seven defined theme titles.

Abstracts can be up to 300 words in plain text only. The submitting author does not have to be the presenting author. There is an expectation that by submitting an abstract, the presenting author will go on to register (including making payment) and subsequently travel to Cardiff to present at the meeting. You can submit your abstract(s) for an oral or a poster preference, but please note that this is just a preference, and the organisers reserve the right to change the presentation type when trying to make-up and balance the overall programme. There is scope for multiple parallel sessions.

The meeting is open to the world, and indeed we encourage international involvements and collaborations.

We look forward to welcoming you to Cardiff in September.

Best wishes,

Mario.

- Mario M. Bisi (UKRI STFC RAL Space)
- Claire Garland (IOP)
- Mark Gibbs (Met Office)
- Ian W. McCrea (UKRI STFC RAL Space)

MEETING: 15th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-15), Deqing, China, October 16-20, 2023

From: Xuzhi Zhou (xuzhi.zhou at gmail.com)

We are pleased to announce that the 15th International Conference on Substorms (ICS-15) will be held this year, from October 16-20, in Deqing, China. The conference aims to bring together scientists from the magnetospheric, ionospheric, and planetary communities to review the recent discoveries in light of recent space missions and numerical simulations, and to discuss the current status and future direction of substorm research.

The meeting will be a hybrid meeting with online components. But we strongly encourage in-person participation, since the conference series are known for the atmosphere of lively discussions. We will start each day with a tutorial lecture on a specific topic, and we will provide sufficient time for questions and dialogues on each session.

The abstract submission is now open at the meeting website (http://ics15.cssr.org.cn/). Registration and housing pages will be open soon. The deadline for abstract submission is July 31, 2023. We look forward to meeting you in China!

MEETING: ESA Brainstorming on Astrobiology Workshop -- Invitation for Applications

From: Laura A. Hayes (laura.hayes at esa.int)

Dear colleagues,

ESA is organising an open, focused, and multidisciplinary workshop -- a Brainstorming on Astrobiology -- this autumn. On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are delighted to invite applications from the solar and the stellar communities.

At this workshop, we aim to connect experts on themes related to astrobiology from ESA and the wider scientific community, with the goal of fostering new collaborations, connecting across complementary fields, and identifying ways to progress effectively, while leveraging the state-of-the art in current and future facilities and theory. We will engage with the wider scientific community and public during the conference via public talks as well as afterwards by publishing the outcome of the workshop via our website and/or a high-impact journal.

As discussions and connecting across the different themes covered are so central to the success of the workshop, we request all participants to attend as much of the workshop as possible. Experts in related areas are encouraged to be in contact beforehand to identify common themes and potential points of discussion, as a key goal of the workshop is to foster discussion.

Please submit your application by 15 June 2023 if you are available to participate and contribute to this workshop. We are of course happy to discuss further should you have any questions and look forward to hearing from you.

JOB OPENING: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Space debris Identification and Tracking, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

From: Dr. Mojtaba Akhavan-Tafti (akhavant at umich.edu) (akhavant at umich.edu)

The Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering (CLaSP) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for a unique research-to-operation (R2O) industry collaboration to develop novel, innovative techniques to detect, track, and persistently monitor "non-trackable" orbital debris. The successful candidate will commit to one-year (full-time, with the opportunity to extend the contract for an additional year) with Dr. Mojtaba Akhavan-Tafti and Prof. Nilton Renno.

The detection of currently non-trackable orbital debris would enable safer operation of valuable government and commercial space assets. Research will focus on 1) developing novel methods to identify debris signatures, and 2) establishing techniques for the persistent monitoring of the debris distribution. To achieve these, ground-based, in-situ, experimental, and simulated data are utilized to train and test algorithms.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, electrical or computer engineering, or a closely related discipline by the start of the position. The eligible applicant has demonstrated experience in (a) analyzing in-situ fields and plasma measurements or remote electromagnetic radiation data, AND (b) artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).

Please submit your application including (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a list of publications, (3) statement of the past and current research experience (up to 2 pages), (4) copies of certificates for full academic record, and (5) up to three names of references with the full contact information in a single PDF file via this Google Form: https://forms.gle/dgaTRB3GKmG7eiZ99.

The application submission deadline is June 30, 2023. Review of application materials will begin June 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. The position is available immediately. Please send your queries to Dr. Mojtaba Akhavan-Tafti (akhavant (at) umich.edu).
