MEETING: Lunar Plasma Interdisciplinary Network (LuPIN) Workshop in Björkliden, Kiruna, Sweden

From: Stas Barabash (stas.barabash at irf.se)

Lunar Plasma Interdisciplinary Network (LuPIN) workshop in Björkliden, Kiruna, Sweden, Sept 4-8, 2023

https://irfpy.irf.se/lupin/events/lupin-1/

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna, Sweden, is organizing a workshop on the topic of the plasma–exosphere–surface–dust coupling at the Moon with the goal to establish Lunar Plasma Interdisciplinary Network (LuPIN).

In recent years, all major space agencies were actively working preparing large scale lunar exploration. However, the field of Moon-environment interaction, in particular, the complex but fascinating coupling between the solar wind/magnetospheric plasma–energetic particles–exosphere–dust–solid-surface–mini-magnetosphere, received less attention. With this in mind, IRF is organizing a 3-day workshop at a beautiful mounting resort close to Kiruna, Sweden, to discuss the science of the space environment on the Moon and establish and develop the respective contact net. We will allow plenty of time for science presentations, discussions, and networking.

Due to limited number of participants, registration is only possible on the first-come-first-serve basis.

Send a message to the organizer, Dr. Yoshifumi Futaana (futaana at irf.se), for registration request or if you have any further questions.

MEETING: DASH Meeting Abstract Submission is Open

From: Jon Vandegriff, Sandy Antunes, Brian Thomas, Jack Ireland, Julie Barnum, James McAteer, Arnaud Masson (jon.vandegriff at jhuapl.edu)

We are happy to announce a conference dedicated to software, analysis, and data of the Heliophysics community. The Data, Analysis and Software in Heliophysics (DASH) meeting will provide a unique venue for practitioners to share ideas, learn about new and emerging trends, and connect with others. We are aiming to avoid the death-by-powerpoint approach to meetings, and we are striving for interactive sessions, with many chances for discussion. In the era of burgeoning open science, collaboration is becoming a new currency for progress, and we hope for this meeting to become an annual opportunity to enhance our collective knowledge. Missions and small projects alike are becoming more software and data intensive, so this is a good time to bolster our community and learn from each other. Submissions to the meeting will be captured and archived online as a Zenodo collection.

The meeting is Oct 9-11, 2023 and will be in Laurel, MD USA at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. It is adjacent to the IHDEA meeting (Oct 12-13, same venue).

Abstract submission is now open:
http://dash.heliophysics.net
https://secwww.jhuapl.edu/EventLink/Event/295
Registration will open in July.

SuperDARN Data and Software Resources

From: Kathryn McWilliams (kathryn.mcwilliams at usask.ca)

On behalf of the SuperDARN community, I would like to bring your attention to some cite-able data and software resources that the SuperDARN collaboration has available for data users.

SuperDARN aimed for best practices in FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data principles in creating these resources.

Importantly, the combination of SuperDARN's
    - DOI'd datasets
    - DOI'd software and
    - metadata listing any options you used during data processing
ensures reproducibility for scientific publications.

* DOI'd SuperDARN Data:
The historical SuperDARN dataset as been published at the following data repository:
    https://www.frdr-dfdr.ca/repo/collection/superdarn

The SuperDARN RAWACF/DAT data are published by year, with each year having a unique DOI. Each data publication contains a README file that we ask you to read carefully. The README file contains rules of the road for using the data, as well as contact information for SuperDARN Principal Investigators with data in the publication for that year. When you are using SuperDARN data, we ask that you reach out to the PI whose data you are using, to check for any potential issues with the data and to offer collaboration. PI teams can offer data interpretation and scientific collaboration, as well as assist with data processing. The one-year datasets are published on FRDR only after all data embargoes expire. For data that are more recent than those published on FRDR, users can contact a SuperDARN PI directly.

* DOI'd Data Processing Software***
The Radar Software Toolkit (RST) is SuperDARN's software for data processing (e.g., RAWACF to FITACF to GRID to MAP). RST is published with a DOI and is available here:
    https://zenodo.org/record/7467337

* DOI'd Data Visualization Software
In addition to the plotting tools in RST, SuperDARN has python-based data visualization software, pyDARN, which is published here:
    https://zenodo.org/record/7767590

Thank you to those of you already using SuperDARN data, and we welcome new users to explore these resources. We hope that these tools will help you with data access and make publication easier for you.

With kind regards,
Kathryn McWilliams
Chair, SuperDARN Principal Investigator Executive Council

JOB OPENING: Software Engineer at UCL/MSSL

From: Suzanne Winter (s.winter at ucl.ac.uk)

Title: Software engineer post to join the SMILE project at MSSL/UCL

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, talented Software Engineer to join the SMILE project at the Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Science Laboratory - MSSL) of University College London (UCL).

The post holder will be a member of the MSSL SMILE team. SMILE (Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) is a joint mission of the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) that will study the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth’s magnetosphere. In early 2025 the mission will take into space four instruments, two of them being imagers, the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and the UV Imager (UVI), and two measuring the conditions of the particles and magnetic field in situ in the Earth’s magnetosheath and in the solar wind. SXI will take X-ray images of the dayside magnetosphere with the purpose of studying its response to solar wind variations in a totally new way.

The purpose of the job is to develop software for the production and archive of SXI data products. It would be desirable for the candidate to have an appreciation of the issues involved with solar-terrestrial relationships and interest in space weather. The post is offered for 18 months in the first instance, with the possibility of further extension during the operational phase of the SMILE mission, which is nominally due to last three years. To apply and for further details and job description go to https://www.ucl.ac.uk/work-at-ucl/search-ucl-jobs/details?jobId=11781&jobTitle=Software%20Engineer . Closing date: 17 July 2023.
