Nominate a Deserving Colleague for an AGU or SPA Award

From: Geoffrey Reeves (geoff at reevesresearch.org)

It’s the time of year again when we all have an opportunity to recognize our friends and colleagues who have made outstanding contributions to our science and community. The nomination period is open now and closes on April 12. Putting together a successful nomination package takes time and effort so please start early.

Union awards that are of most relevance to SPA members are described at https://connect.agu.org/spa/awards/union-awards. SPA Section awards are described at https://connect.agu.org/spa/awards/section-awards .

To start a nomination go to https://aguhonors.secure-platform.com/a/organizations/main/home . From there choose Union Medals, Awards, and Prizes; Section Awards; or Union Fellows Program and log in using your AGU credentials.

The Edmond M. Dewan Graduate Student Scholarship is also accepting applications until April 12 at https://www.agu.org/Learn-and-Develop/Learn/Travel-Research-Grants/Edmond-M-Dewan-young-scientist-scholarship .

Applications for travel grants including the Basu Innovation Scholar, Max Hammond, and Frank McDonald awards will be open in July and August.

Let me point out again the great resource we have in the form of SPA’s Nomination Task Force. The NTF was developed to increase the diversity of nominees for AGU Fellow but has expanded its scope and stands ready to help with any Union or Section award. If you’re new to leading a nomination and want some guidance the NTF and/or SPA Leadership Team can help with that too. (https://connect.agu.org/spa/committees/ntf)

Thank you
Geoff, Therese, & Kathy

Volunteer to Be on an SPA Honors Committee

From: Geoffrey Reeves (geoff at reevesresearch.org)

Every year SPA recognizes outstanding contributions through a number of section awards, honors, grants, and scholarships. This only works thanks to the dedicated work of volunteers that serve on screening and evaluation committees.

In 2023 we are in need of people to volunteer to serve on several of our honors committees. Please use this form to volunteer. If you are not called upon this year we will keep your name and contact you in subsequent years as positions open up.

Committee members nominally serve for 2 years but longer or shorter terms can easily be accommodated. Most of the work comes in late April and early May after the nomination deadline which is April 12, 2023. All reviews and recommendations are done by email or teleconference. Chairs of the committees are responsible for interfacing with SPA leadership (minimal), recruiting new members as needed, and keeping the review process on track to complete recommendations on time

"Student/Early Career Convener" - Option for Fall AGU Session Proposals

From: Amy Keesee (SM), Hazel Bain (SH), Scott England (SA) (amy.keesee at unh.edu)

We would like to remind you that Fall AGU session proposals include the option to include a student or early career (S/EC) convener to your list of conveners! This option appears in the "People" step, when names are provided and role assignments are made. Note that having a student/early career convener is IN ADDITION to the primary convener and up to two conveners (resulting in a minimum of one and maximum of four conveners). This gives student and early career members the opportunity to shadow the convening process, to learn from experienced conveners and to give the S/EC convener the opportunity to broaden their participation in AGU23.

Please consider including a student or early career researcher when you submit your session proposal for SPA Aeronomy (SA), Magnetospheric Physics (SM), and Solar-Heliospheric Physics (SH). This gives these members of our community the opportunity to learn how to organize a session, gain visibility within their subfield, and provide new perspectives. If you are submitting a session proposal and would like help finding a student or early career person to include, please contact your section secretary.

If you are a student or early career member interested in this opportunity and would like us to facilitate finding an appropriate session to join, please complete the form at https://forms.gle/CTfZaLae1BYmQpuB7 .

Questions, comments? Please reach out to us!

JOB OPENING: Three Postdoctoral Positions in Space Sciences at University of Texas at Dallas

From: Xiaojia Zhang (xjzhang at utdallas.edu)

The Physics Department in the School of Natural Science and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is seeking to fill three postdoctoral researcher positions affiliated with UTD’s W. B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences. The candidate needs to hold a Ph.D. in space physics or a closely related field.

The successful candidate will have the flexibility to conduct research on a wide variety of topics related to plasma wave generation, wave-particle interactions in Earth’s or Jovian magnetosphere, and/or the resultant ionospheric feedback. The incumbent shall analyze particle and wave measurements (such as from THEMIS, MMS, Van Allen Probes, or Juno) to understand the underlying plasma physics, thus demonstrated experience with spacecraft data analysis and space plasma theory are desired. Work is to be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Xiao-Jia Zhang (duties listed in the job post are just to exemplify one potential topic, please refer to https://profiles.utdallas.edu/index.php/xjzhang for additional information on the scope of research in Dr. Zhang’s group).
