The SPA Executive Committee would like to highlight the following items for the upcoming AGU Fall Meeting. We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

1. The Space Physics and Aeronomy Reception and Section Gathering will be Tuesday, 6:30-8pm in the Golden Gate Ballroom A (B2 Level, Marriott). Please come even if you weren't able to get a ticket! (AGU changed to free tickets this year and won't be checking; they've also created overflow space if the room reaches capacity.)

2. The SPA Agency "Night" will be Tuesday, 1-2pm in 2001 - West (Level 2, West, MC). TH23E Space Physics and Aeronomy Section Agency Meeting. Representatives from NASA, NSF, and NOAA will be presenting.

3. The SPA Named Lectures will be on Thursday morning and have been scheduled to avoid overlap with most SPA sessions. This year there will be the Nicolet Lecture, 8:30-10am, and the Van Allen Lecture, 10:20-11:50am. Both will be in 2001 - West (Level 2, West, MC). The Nicolet Lecture is "Cosmic Dust in Planetary Atmospheres" given by John Plane. The Van Allen Lecture is "The Heavy Ion Contribution to the Storm-Time Magnetosphere" given by Lynn Kistler.

4. SPA-related Town Halls to be aware of:
TH13E Raising Awareness on Mental Health in the Earth and Space Sciences Monday 1:00

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Research Associate and/or Senior Research Positions in Space Physics at Princeton University

From: Dan White (spacephysics at princeton.edu)

The Space Physics Group (see https://spacephysics.princeton.edu/) in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, anticipates offering one or more postdoctoral or more senior research positions in the observational study of Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) and Energetic Neutral Atoms (ENAs).

The Space Physics Group researches many aspects of space physics (aka Heliophysics), with a strong emphasis on experimental and observational space plasma physics. The Group currently leads NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (ISOIS) energetic particle instrument suite, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission and the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission, which will launch in 2025 to explore the details of particle acceleration and the Sun's interaction with the local interstellar medium.

The successful candidate(s) will play a significant role in the analysis and publication of SEP observations from ISOIS and/or ENA observations from IBEX and must have both significant prior experiences analyzing at least one of these type(s) of particle data, as well as the proven ability to lead and participate in the rapid development and publication of numerous excellent research articles. A Ph.D. is required in physics, astrophysics, space science, or a closely related field.

Interested persons must apply online at https://puwebp.princeton.edu/AcadHire/apply/application.xhtml?listingId=26909 selecting Space Physics as the position you are interested in.

From: Martin Eriksson (martin.eriksson at irf.se)

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is seeking a someone to join the Solar System Physics and Space Technology (SSPT) program at IRF in Kiruna, to advance our knowledge of Venus’ magnetotail plasma processes.

The Ph.D. project will focus on the analysis of data collected by the space instrument that SSPT built to understand how solar wind interaction operates on Venus.

OBITUARY: Frank Crary (1969-2023)

From: Fran Bagenal (bagenal at colorado.edu)

Frank Crary passed away in November 2023. Throughout his career he contributed to research in planetary magnetospheres, participating in the Galileo, Deep Space 1, Cassini, Juno and MAVEN missions. He attended UC Berkeley and obtained a bachelors degree in Physics and Astrophysics in 1991. He came to CU Boulder for graduate studies where he combined both Voyager and Galileo data to study the interaction of Io with the surrounding magnetospheric plasma, as well as the Io plasma torus. Frank received his Ph.D. from CU’s Astrophysical, Planetary, and Atmospheric Sciences Department in 1998. In 2000 he moved to University of Michigan for post-doctoral work on the CAPS instrument on Cassini. This was followed by work at the Southwest Research Institute where he eventually became the PI of CAPS and attained the rank of Senior Research Scientist. He returned to LASP in 2012 and continued to work on CAPS data analysis and served as a MAVEN Participating Scientist. Frank chaired the Cassini Magnetosphere Target Working Team (2008-2017). In a recent promotion letter a colleague said “I credit Frank with raising the scientific productivity of the Cassini mission very substantially through his responsibility to that (often thankless) task, his dedication, his always searching not for the path of least resistance, but the path of greatest benefit to science.”

Frank’s interest in the physics of planetary plasmas spanned a wide range of topics from magnetospheric structure and dynamics to plasma-satellite interactions – Io, Enceladus, Titan, Triton, Europa. He will be remembered as the physicist you wanted in the room when struggling to understand the physics behind a mysterious observation. Frank will also be remembered as a kind scientist who was always willing to discuss difficult concepts in detail with colleagues and graduate students, never condescending and always with respect. His dry wit and eloquent correspondence will be missed by friends and colleagues.
