Dr John Hargreaves (1930 - 2024)

From: Farideh Honary, Jim Wild (j.wild at lancaster.ac.uk)

Lancaster University deeply regrets to report the recent death of Honorary Researcher Dr John Keith Hargreaves. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

John began working at Lancaster University in 1969 and following his retirement in 1984, he continued to be involved with the University for over almost 40 years into retirement, latterly undertaking research with the Space and Planetary Physics Group in the Department of Physics.

The following tribute was written by Professor Farideh Honary, with contributions from Professor Jim Wild, both from the Department of Physics.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, John Keith Hargreaves, who passed away on 6th June 2024 at the age of 93. John was a brilliant physicist, a dedicated researcher, and a cherished member of the academic community.

John’s journey in the field of physics began with his education at the University of Manchester, where he graduated with a B.Sc. in Physics and Chemistry in 1951. He went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1962, with a thesis on VLF radio propagation and the behaviour of the lower ionosphere. His academic achievements also included an M.Sc. from the University of Manchester and a D.Sc. for his pioneering work on auroral radio absorption.

Throughout his illustrious career, John held numerous positions across the globe, contributing significantly to the advancement of atmospheric and space physics. His roles included Senior Lecturer at the University of Lancaster, Project Leader at the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, Colorado, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire, and numerous visiting and consulting roles with prestigious institutions such as the University of California, San Diego, and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska.

John’s research was groundbreaking, focusing on radio wave propagation, ionospheric physics, and auroral studies. He published extensively across eight decades from 1954 to 2021, authoring over one hundred scientific papers and several books, and delivered many presentations at international conferences. His contributions to the field were widely recognised, and he was a valued member of various scientific committees and organisations, including the American Geophysical Union and the Institute of Physics.

John Hargreaves will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. May he rest in peace.
