Deadline Approaching for SPA Section Award Nominations

From: Therese Moretto Jorgensen (Therese.moretto at gmail.com)

There's still time to get your AGU Section Award and Fellows nominations in.

The deadline to submit nominations for Section Awards, Scholarships and Grants, and the Union Fellows Program is 27 March at 11:59 PM ET.

In recent years, the number of nominations to almost all of our Section awards have declined drastically. For this year, the award system so far has received no completed submissions for several of our awards, including the SPARC, Basu US, and Basu International awards, and only a single submission to the Scarf award.

Please consider showing your appreciation for your students and colleagues by nominating them for recognition by the SPA community.

Visit the AGU Honors Explorer (https://www.agu.org/honors/honors-explorer ) to browse the full catalogue of opportunities and review submission requirements for each. Use the Section filter to list only SPA awards.

Kathy Reeves (SPA President Elect)

NSF CEDAR Solicitation and Virtual Office Hour

From: Shikha Raizada, Tai-Yin Huang (sraizada at nsf.gov)

Dear Colleagues,

This serves as a polite reminder for an upcoming Cedar solicitation with a target date of May 3, 2024. This opportunity seeks proposals with a focus on the Earth’s upper atmospheric regions that cover a variety of topics, for example, coupling, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics on regional and global scales. Submissions relevant to investigations about Earth’s aeronomy that include but are not limited to mesosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, magnetosphere areas and their interactions are welcome. The program will fund research activities that utilize ground-based, or satellite observations as well as theoretical and modelling efforts. The proposals need to follow guidelines as mentioned in the NSF proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG).

We will hold a virtual office hour (VOH) at 2 – 3 PM (EST) on next Friday, March 15th 2024. for researchers interested in this funding opportunity. We strongly encourage early career scientists or first time PIs to attend this VOH. Here is the registration link:
https://nsf.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJItdOmqrD4uHp4dfrridcZ9CvdhxQFzRa8
Once you register, a confirmation email with a zoom meeting link will be sent to you.

In case of any questions, please contact Drs. Shikha Raizada (sraizada at naf.gov) or Tai-Yin Huang (thuang at nsf.gov) for more details.

Sincerely,

Shikha and Tai-Yin

NSF Reviewers Sought for DASI Solicitation

From: Roman Makarevich (rmakarev at nsf.gov)

Dear Colleagues,

The quality of the awards selected for support by the National Science Foundation depends greatly on the critical judgments of expert reviewers. For our upcoming DASI solicitation (NSF 24-538), we are looking for potential reviewers to either be ad-hoc reviewers or panel reviewers. We’d like to have a diverse group of reviewers to help us identify proposals worthy of NSF investment. If you are interested and do not plan to submit or are not involved in any DASI proposal for this year’s competition, please send the following information to me (rmakarev at nsf.gov) by April 15, 2024 for consideration.

Name:
Affiliation:
Current position/career stage:
Research areas (keep it brief or use keywords):

Note that expressing your interest in serving as a reviewer does not imply that you will be requested for the service.

Thank you,

Dr. Roman Makarevich
Program Director, Geospace Facilities AGS/GEO

MEETING: 2024 Software for the NASA Science Mission Directorate Workshop

From: Rebecca Ringuette (rebecca.ringuette at nasa.gov)

Dear Colleagues,

The executive and planning committees of the 2024 Software for the NASA Science Mission Directorate Workshop invite the NASA software community to register for the workshop and submit your abstracts. In the spirit of Open Science, the planning committee would also like to receive your input on the topics to be prioritized at the workshop. Please provide your input through the form on the website by March 29.

We welcome abstracts for talks, discussions sessions, and posters at the link. As part of the event, we plan for opportunities for people to share their work, so please consider submitting an abstract to share the exciting projects that you are developing!

Please note that registration and abstract submission are performed using the same form. Please see the form for details. Registration for virtual attendance will remain open after March 29, but in-person attendance and abstract submissions will only be fully considered if submitted prior to this date. As the target audience for this event, priority for selection of abstracts and in-person attendance will be given to NASA employees and contractors.

The 2024 Software for the NASA Science Mission Directorate Workshop will be hosted at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA from Tuesday, May 7 to Thursday, May 9 of 2024. The workshop aims to explore what the current opportunities and challenges are for the various categories and lifecycle stages of software that are relevant for activities funded by the NASA Science Mission Directorate. This includes increasing the visibility of software being developed and to ignite wider collaborations on those challenges between centers, missions, data repositories, and sciences.

We invite the community to this virtual workshop with an in-person option to discuss these topics, identify opportunities and challenges in each, and set priorities for paths forward as possible. There will be no registration fee and the meeting will be virtual with an option for in-person attendance. In-person attendance will be limited by venue capacity. Please visit the website for more information. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Rebecca Ringuette on behalf of the executive and planning committees.

Dear SPA community,

A gentle reminder that the deadline for PARS 2024 applications is March 31, 2024.

The 2024 Polar Aeronomy and Radio Science (PARS) summer school will be held in person at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) between August 6-15, 2024. The summer school provides faculty, graduate, and advanced undergraduate students with exposure to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Subauroral Geophysical Observatory (SAGO) for Space Physics and Radio Science and the HAARP research site in Gakona, Alaska.

The summer school’s goal is to provide student and advisor mentor pairs an opportunity to study the upper atmosphere and ionosphere at polar latitudes, with practical experience built into the learning process.

The deadline for application submission is March 31, 2024. Notice of acceptance will be sent to participants by April 14, 2024.

For more information about the school, contact Evans Callis, Lead, HAARP Research Support Services at ehcallis at alaska.edu or 907-474-2641.
