Imaging solar wind interactions in soft x-rays

Abstract:

Determining the nature of the solar wind’s interaction with the Earth’s magnetosphere is a central objective of heliophysics. A variety of mechanisms operating on the dayside magnetopause have been
proposed to account for this interaction, including steady and transient reconnection, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, pressure pulses, and diffusion. Global measurements are needed to quantify the significance of each as a function of solar wind and geomagnetic conditions. IBEX observations provide the first glimpses of this interaction in energetic neutral atoms. However, charge enhance of high charge state solar wind ions with exospheric neutrals also results in soft x-ray emissions, ideal
for imaging plasma density structures at the bow shock, magnetopause, magnetosheath, and cusps. This presentation describes the physics underlying current efforts to image the dayside magnetosphere and
the prospects for such an imager.
