Greetings,
In early August I sent out a Computing Update talking about the campus migration to multi-factor authentication for the UCLA Single Logon system. Over the weekend we got an update on the migration that I need to pass along.

First, what is multi-factor authentication? For those who are not familiar with this it is simply an authentication system that requires more than a user name and password to log on. You have probably already encountered this in the form of a secondary question that is asked when you sign onto a financial institution web site or other site containing a lot of your personal information. Multi-factor authentication, also known by the initials MFA, can come in many forms from the added question, to entering a code that is texted to you to the more sophisticated scan of a thumb print. The objective of course is to make it significantly harder for someone who is not you to log onto your account. And many popular web sites like Google and Facebook do offer it as an optional alternative.

As I mentioned back in August UCLA had rolled it out as an optional service for those of us who already have UCLA Logon accounts. Over the weekend the university announced that all faculty and staff of the University will need to convert their accounts to use MFA by October 31. More details will be coming when Fall Term begins but if you have not done it already and want to get a head start the point to begin is at the web page https://www.it.ucla.edu/security/resources/mfa-at-ucla

I would add that UCLA has provided a number of different MFA options and while the DUO app for iPhone or Android is the most efficient way to go, if you can't or don't want to add an app to your phone there are text messaging and land line alternatives as well.

As always, if you have questions please check with myself or Rod for help.

Thanks for your help and more details will be sent out in a couple weeks.
Take care
Steve Salyards
