Dear Everyone,

We would like to send Will Greer and Steve Salyards off into the sunset with a generous farewell gift to remember their time in EPSS. If you wish to contribute please see Hilda Avanesian in 3805 Geology.

It should be noted that together Will and Steve represent nearly 70 years of dedicated service to the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences (known in earlier years as Earth and Space Sciences, and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics). Below is a brief history on their appointments at UCLA.

William Greer began his career at UCLA during the summer of 1976. He was hired as a part-time lab assistant by the 6th floor IGPP engineering group, while also attending LA Pierce College, to work on the Galileo Space Flight Magnetometer, and Ground and Underwater Magnetometers for the US Navy. Three years later he was picked up full-time and since then has worked on a multitude of space missions and ground projects, as well as providing technical expertise to faculty and invaluable field support to the department. Will leaves his mark on a wide range of projects, among them:

  * Space flight missions: MMS, Galileo, ELFIN, and dozens more for PI Prof. Chris Russell
  * Ground projects: such as Mt. St. Helens magnetometer
  * Special projects: underwater magnetometers for the US Navy, fetal monitoring system for Cedars Sinai, Physics pre-amp antenna array in Alaska, Hughes aircraft laser recognition
  * Instrumentation: 40-50 magnetometers for Russell projects, resistivity equipment, seismic gear
  * Departmental support: first monitor wiring system for mainframe computers, first and second installation of building Internet, basement machine shop, control for first floor furnace, carbon arc welder, cabinetry for individual labs and hallway display, and hundreds of small repair projects
  * Field support: field class support since 1970s, African rift field trip, drill trailer, battery racks design, installation of ground explosives

Along with the many successful flight and ground projects, Will has thoroughly enjoyed working closely with the Geophysics field classes and all the faculty, staff and students in this department for 42 years, both in the field and in the Geology Building and Slichter Hall.

During retirement he looks forward to traveling, returning to his woodworking, welding and machining hobbies, and tinkering around the house (aka checking off items on the 'honey do list').

We will miss him tremendously!

Stephen Salyards joined the department in January 1992 as an assistant researcher working on database management for PI Prof. Dave Jackson and the Southern California Earthquake Center GPS Group. His arrival proved to be well-timed when the Landers earthquake struck six months later; the group was deployed to the desert for weeks at a time to study GPS movement and post-seismic rebound. Later Steve oversaw installation of permanent GPS stations on the Geology building roof and created the first local SCEC website.

In 1995 the departmental IT position became vacant and Steve transitioned to his current role as IT Director. Since then he has been involved in numerous projects and seen significant IT development within the department. His many accomplishments include:

  *   Teaching EPS SCI 8
  * Serving as Communications Chief for the Science Operations Center on the Mars Polar Lander project (PI Prof. David Paige)
  *   Overseeing development and launch of the Geology basement computer lab (B707) for remote sensing classes and Linux support;
  *   Administering five generations of network technology in the Geology building: from terminal servers to thin co-axial cable to early (ATM) fiber to Gigabit fiber to the current mix of eduroam wireless and wired connections;
  * Implementing CCLE for course websites; and
  * Managing the evolution of the departmental website through five different webmasters.

Over the years he has replaced hundreds of computers and pulled at least two miles of wire through the ceilings of the Geology building.

Steve's plans for retirement include spending time with his new granddaughter as well as pursuing short-term teaching opportunities, providing computer consultation services and expanding his freelance writing skills.

We wish him well in this next phase of life, and will greatly miss his institutional memory in the department!

Best,

Carlene
