Juno’s close encounter with Ganymede’s space environment

presented by

Dr. George Clark

APL

NASA’s Juno mission is a Jupiter polar orbiting spacecraft dedicated to studying the origins, atmosphere, interior and magnetosphere of the largest planet in our solar system. Juno began its extended mission in the summer of 2021, ushering in new and exciting science opportunities. First of which, was a close flyby of Jupiter’s largest moon—Ganymede—on 7 June 2021. Ganymede is of high scientific interest to the magnetospheric and planetary communities because it is the only known moon in the Solar System to generate its own internal magnetic field and thus, forms a mini-magnetosphere embedded deep within Jupiter’s magnetosphere. Equipped with state-of-the-art magnetospheric instrumentation, Juno made an array of observations that are providing new insights into Ganymede’s space environment and its interaction with Jupiter. In this presentation, we report on these observations and highlight new mysteries that will be important for future missions to address, such as ESA’s JUICE and NASA’s Clipper spacecraft.
