2. Invitation to a New GEM focus Group “3D ionospheric electrodynamics and its impact on the magnetosphere - ionosphere - thermosphere coupled system”
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Hyunju Connor, Binzheng Zhang (hyunju.k.connor at nasa.gov)

Dear Colleagues,

We’d like to advertise a new GEM focus group titled “3D ionospheric electrodynamics and its impact on the magnetosphere – ionosphere – thermosphere coupled system”. Our two 1.5hr sessions are currently scheduled in the Monday afternoon (Jun 19). We encourage scientists in related fields to participate our sessions. If you are interested in giving a talk, please send your talk title to Binzheng Zhang (binzheng at ucar.edu) or Hyunju Connor (hyunju.k.connor at nasa.gov). Here is our brief session description:

Although strong coupling of the magnetosphere – ionosphere – thermosphere (MIT) system is widely recognized by the space science community, studying this coupling dynamics as a whole global system has yet to be conducted comprehensively. This GEM focus group addresses current understandings and challenges in the MIT coupling dynamics with emphasis on the magnetospheric energy/momentum input and the high-latitude ionospheric electrodynamics. Field-aligned currents, auroral precipitation, Poynting flux, and magnetospheric waves can have significant impacts on the MIT coupling, especially during strong geomagnetic activities. Studying their spatiotemporal dynamics, energy/momentum deposition patterns, and direct impacts on the high-latitude ionosphere (ionospheric upflows, electric fields, conductances, Joule heating, etc) is a key first step to improve our understanding of the MIT coupling dynamics. This focus group invites observations, simulations, theory, or any combination of the three on these topics.
