1. Important GEM Announcement and Call for GEM Steering Committee Vice-Chair Applications
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak AT mail.wvu.edu) and Vania Jordanova (vania AT lanl.gov)

Dear GEM Community,

I am writing to inform you that I am stepping down as Chair of the GEM Steering Committee (SC). Vania Jordanova, the GEM SC Vice-Chair, is willing to step into the Chair role for the next two years (through the 2022 summer workshop). She asked me to stay on as Chair until the end of March to help with the transition period and the selection of a new Vice-Chair, and I agreed.

It has been a real pleasure for me to serve the GEM community. We have amazing people, from the long-time attendees to the newest students. I thank you all for the opportunity to contribute. The next couple of years promise to be historic for GEM, and with Vania at the helm, the GEM community is in excellent shape!

We are opening up a community-wide search for the next GEM SC Vice-Chair (Chair-Elect) to serve for this term (Apr 2020 - June 2022), then to serve as SC Chair for the following two years (2022-2024). The success of the GEM program relies upon the dedicated service made by members of the SC. We invite interested members of the community to apply for these positions or to nominate community members that would make excellent candidates.

For a list of the current SC members, please go to the following link:

https://gem.epss.ucla.edu/mediawiki/index.php/Organization_and_People

The duties and responsibilities of the SC Vice-Chair are summarized in the GEM “best practices” document, which can be found here:

http://gem.epss.ucla.edu/mediawiki/pdf/GEM_BestPractices_6Oct2019.pdf

The selection of these new positions will occur quickly — the deadline for applications is Friday, March 20, and the selection will take place by Friday, March 27. To apply, please submit a succinct one-page CV and a separate brief statement of interest (no more than half a page) describing your interest in the position, any relevant experience, and your expected approach to serve the GEM community and maintain its interactive and workshop-style. Please send the requested documents to Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak AT mail.wvu.edu) and Vania Jordanova (vania AT lanl.gov). Send the name and contact information of nominations to the same addresses.

2. Call for Proposals for Space Weather Sessions at the Jan 2021 AMS Meeting
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Richard Behnke, Barbara Thompson (behnke.richard at yahoo.com)

Call for Sessions: 18th Conference on Space Weather at the 101st Meeting of the American Meteorological Society

The 18th Conference on Space Weather of the American Meteorological Society will be held 10-14 January 2021 in New Orleans, LA. The theme of the 2021 Annual AMS Meeting is “Strengthening engagement with communities through our science and service.”

You are invited to submit a Session Topic Proposal for the Conference on Space Weather. Proposals are due 1 April 2020. Choose “18th Conference on Space Weather” from the Session Proposal Page: Call for Sessions

The Committee on Space Weather strives to create a balanced program each year, capitalizing on the unique position of the Conference on Space Weather within the much larger forecasting and research environment of the AMS. Past session topics have spanned many areas of space weather research and operations, including focused research domains, modeling, space weather impacts, space weather history, national and international programs, forecasting methods, operational decisions, outreach activities, communications, and mission development. We plan to continue our tradition of embracing a wide range of sessions relevant to all areas of space weather, so please consider submitting a topic idea by 1 April 2020.

If you have any questions, please contact the organizers: Richard Behnke behnke.richard at yahoo.com or Barbara J. Thompson <barbara.j.thompson at nasa.gov>

3. Postdoctoral or Guest Researcher Position in Space Weather
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Emiliya Yordanova, Andrew Dimmock (emiliya.yordanova at irfu.se)

Swedish Institute of Space Physics is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow or Guest Researcher in Space Weather

The position is related to space weather research in the field of space plasma physics. The research is based on the investigation of the space weather link between the dynamics of the terrestrial magnetosheath during coronal mass ejection passages using multi-spacecraft observations (solar wind monitors, Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe, MMS, THEMIS, Cluster, Geotail), and the resulting geomagnetic responses measured by ground observations (IMAGE, MIRACLE, SuperMAG and SuperDARN) at high latitudes.

The position is available at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden, for two (2) years.

Last Application Date: 2020-04-17
