In memoriam Helfried K. Biernat

The Space Research Institute (Institut für Weltraumforschung - IWF) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz is deeply mourning the loss of Prof. Helfried K. Biernat. At the age of 69, the longtime scientific member and group leader passed away after a long illness.

Helfried K. Biernat studied physics at the University of Graz. He worked at IWF from 1978 and led the Theoretical Space Plasma Physics group until his retirement in 2012. Since 1987 he served as lecturer at the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics - today's Institute of Physics, where he habilitated in 1996. In 2000 he was promoted to associate professor at the University of Graz. He supervised more than 25 diploma and doctoral theses.

Beside his research work Helfried K. Biernat organized numerous scientific meetings and workshops and in particular promoted the collaboration with the Soviet Union and Russia.

With the passing of Helfried K. Biernat the Academy and the Institute lose a distinguished and dedicated scientist of international reputation.
