MEETING: L5 in Tandem with L1: Future Space-Weather Missions Workshop – First Announcement

From: Mario M. Bisi (Mario.Bisi at stfc.ac.uk)

Dear Colleagues.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the “L5 in Tandem with L1: Future Space-Weather Missions Workshop” to take place in London, UK, 06-09 March 2017. The Workshop will be held at the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) conference centre in central London supported by GO Science, Met Office, and STFC, and organised by STFC, Met Office, and NOAA SWPC.

The scope of the meeting is expected to include (but is not limited to) the general discussion of how a dedicated L5 mission will improve space-weather forecast services over the current capabilities, how L5 and L1 space-weather monitoring can be carried out in tandem, how and where cost savings can be made by having L5 and L1 space-weather missions planned and prepared in tandem, reports from the Instrument Study Teams that were set up during the May 2015 Workshop, potential partnerships, the ground segment required for L5 space-weather mission support, current and potential observations/measurements that need to be tested/validated for space-weather purposes before they can be made operational, and briefly any new/novel science that L5 space-weather data will allow capitalisation of (since the 2015 workshop).

Full details given in the full NSO Solar News announcement (the additional text is too long to fit into the 2,500-character limit here).

If you are interested in attending the workshop and haven’t already done so, please ensure you subscribe to the L5 Space Weather mailing list so that you get ALL the Workshop-related announcements, then please send an E-Mail (from the E-Mail address you wish to register) to listserv at jiscmail.ac.uk with the subject left and the following line in the body of the E-Mail:

then follow the instructions from the automated reply system and after this Mario will be able to confirm your registration manually in the Jiscmail system. Only people registered on the list will be able to mail to the list as well as receive from the list. Mario will be the lead owner/moderator of the list to ensure the list is well maintained and not abused.

We will be in touch soon with registration and further information as it becomes available.

JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Position in Radio and Ionospheric Research at Interamerican University of Puerto Rico

From: Brett Isham (bisham at bayamon.inter.edu)

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, located on the Bayamón campus near San Juan, has an opening for a postdoctoral faculty position in radio and ionospheric research.

Required qualifications are a PhD, relevant research experience, and proficiency in spoken English or Spanish. The position is open immediately and may be extended for up to three years, contingent upon available funding.

The successful candidate will participate in the development and use of a new high-frequency radio imaging array at the Interamerican Aguadilla campus in northwest Puerto Rico, with principle goals of producing wide-field HF bistatic radar images of the ionosphere and the first-ever radio images of stimulated ionospheric electromagnetic radio emissions (SEE). The array will be used in conjunction with the HF VIPIR radar in Cayey, Puerto Rico, with the new high-frequency ionospheric modification transmitter at the Arecibo Observatory, and with other local, regional, and space-based instruments. Other duties include teaching one or two BS or MS-level classes per year. The Bayamón campus emphasizes innovative and effective teaching strategies.

Other atmospheric research programs at the Bayamón campus include the study of aerosols in the boundary layer and of plasma instabilities in the auroral ionosphere. The Bayamón campus is the lead institution in the development and construction of the Puerto Rico CubeSat, which incorporates an ion irregularity instrument built by NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and an MF/HF radio instrument built by Mälardalen University in Sweden in collaboration with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the Interamerican Bayamón campus.

Applications should include a one-page cover letter, a CV, brief
statements discussing research and teaching interests and relevant experience, copies of up to five selected publications, copies of university transcripts or diplomas, contact information for three professional references, and a completed Interamerican University employment application form.

To obtain a copy of the application form, for information about submission and deadlines, and for other questions, please contact Prof. Brett Isham at bisham at bayamon.inter.edu.

Interamerican University of Puerto Rico supports equal opportunity in employment and encourages applications from women, veterans, and people with disabilities (M/F/V/H).
