JGR-Space Physics Editor Blog Monthly Highlights

From: Mike Liemohn (liemohn at umich.edu)

Among other journal-related posts, in September I continued my occasional posting about sexism in science. What prompted my new post was that AGU convened a workshop on the topic in early September, "Sexual Harassment in the Sciences: A Call to Respond." Here are some highlights from my blog last month:

September 7: common tweaks I do to AGU manuscript templates

MEETING: AGU Chapman Conference on Dayside Magnetosphere Interactions, 10-14 July 2017, Chengdu, China

From: Qiugang Zong, Philippe Escoubet, David Sibeck, Guan Le, Hui Zhang (qgzong at pku.edu.cn)

The 2017 AGU Chapman Conference on Dayside Magnetosphere Interactions will be held from 10 to 14 July 2017 in Chengdu, China. The conference will address the processes by which solar wind mass, momentum, and energy enter the magnetosphere. Regions of interest include (but is not limited to) the foreshock, bow shock, magnetosheath, magnetopause, and cusps, the dayside magnetosphere, and both the dayside polar and equatorial ionosphere. The meeting is particularly timely due to the results expected from NASA’s MMS mission which was launched in March 2015, arrays of new ground-based instrumentation currently being installed, and the ongoing operations of NASA’s THEMIS, ESA’s Cluster, and JAXA’s Geotail missions. Parallel processes occur at other planets, and recent results from NASA’s MAVEN mission to Mars, as well as ESA’s Mars and Venus Express missions will be actively solicited.

More information on the conference is available at the following link:

MEETING: Second VarSITI General Symposium (VarSITI-2017), Irkutsk, Russia, 10-15 July 2017 - First Circular

From: Kazuo Shiokawa and Katya Georgieva (shiokawa at nagoya-u.jp)

Second VarSITI General Symposium (VarSITI-2017)
Dates: 10-15 July 2017 (Student Tutorial Session on 9 July 2017)
Place: Irkutsk, Russia

Description:
Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact (VarSITI) is the current scientific program of SCOSTEP for the period 2014-2018 (http://www.varsiti.org/). VarSITI focuses on the recent and expected future solar activity and its consequences for the Earth, over various time scales from thousands of years to milliseconds, and at various locations from the solar interior to the Earth’s atmosphere. Four scientific projects are being carried out under VarSITI: (1) Solar Evolution and Extrema (SEE), (2) International Study of Earth-Affecting Solar Transients (ISEST/MiniMax24), (3) Specification and Prediction of the Coupled Inner-Magnetospheric Environment (SPeCIMEN), and (4) Role Of the Sun and the Middle atmosphere/thermosphere/ionosphere In Climate (ROSMIC). The second VarSITI General Symposium in 2017 (VarSITI-2017) will overview the progress of various activities in the four projects at the fourth year of this program, especially to promote the interconnection among these projects. In addition, a student tutorial session on Space Weather will be held on Sunday, 9 July 2017, in collaboration between CCMC and VarSITI.

IUGG Support of Scientific Meetings 2017

From: Clare Watt, Simon Wing (simon.wing at jhuapl.edu)

The program of IUGG support for scientific meetings (e.g. workshops, advanced schools, symposia) is one of the most important means by which the Union and its Associations pursue a goal of promoting geophysics and geodesy through international collaboration. A fraction of the IUGG's budget is devoted to the support of these scientific meetings. The IUGG Executive Committee places great emphasis on maintaining high scientific standards, coverage of a balanced spectrum of topics, and an appropriately broad and international flavor for the scientific program of the meetings. In that respect, the ICSU rules on non-discrimination in the access of qualified scientists from all parts of the world to any IUGG-sponsored meeting apply.

The following guidelines for obtaining IUGG sponsorship should be observed by prospective proposers:

• An IUGG-sponsored scientific meeting should have a well-defined and scientifically relevant theme, should be scheduled at a propitious time for significant progress in the field, and should be of interest to young researchers as well as senior experts.

• While the IUGG embraces all fields in geophysics and geodesy, a proposed program should maintain a balanced scope relevant to IUGG Associations. Each proposal will be judged on its own scientific merits.

• Given the international nature of the Union, meetings are by definition internationally oriented. This requires a well-balanced geographical and gender distribution.

The deadline for the applications is 31 October 2016. The applications should be sent to the IUGG Secretariat (fgkugl at gfz-potsdam.de) and CCed to the IUGG Secretary General (Alik.Ismail-Zadeh at kit.edu).

The guidelines for application can be found here: http://www.iugg.org/meetings/guidelines.php

JOB OPENING: Post-doctoral Position in Space Physics: UT Dallas

From: Russell Stoneback (rstoneba at utdallas.edu)

The Center for Space Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas is involved in multiple upcoming space missions. To support these missions there is a post-doc position available, for up to two years, beginning as early as January, 2017.

The focus of the position is on data analysis of Ion Velocity Meter measurements across multiple platforms. IVMs are slated to fly on the upcoming NASA ICON mission, the COSMIC-2 constellation, and the SORTIE CubeSat. The position will also consider measurements from other sources, particularly the SuperDARN network of ground based radars. Candidates with general ionosphere and/or instrument experience are encouraged to apply, though direct experience with both IVM and SuperDARN is preferred. Duties will include instrument operation support, data production, data analysis, and software development, depending upon the candidate. Experience with open source development, particularly Python, is preferred.

JOB OPENING: PhD Student Position in Theoretical Space Plasma Physics (Fall 2017)

From: Sven Simon (sven.simon at eas.gatech.edu)

The Space Plasma Theory group (leader: Sven Simon) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a PhD student position in theoretical/computational space plasma physics. The student will carry out numerical simulations of the interaction between small solar system bodies and their plasma environments. In particular, we aim to better understand the solar wind interaction of Pluto at the time of the New Horizons flyby and the interaction between Jupiter’s moon Europa and its magnetospheric environment (in anticipation of the upcoming JUICE/Europa Clipper missions). The successful candidate is expected to hold a university degree in theoretical physics, astrophysics, space physics or geophysics. Programming experience is required for the position. Undergraduate students who will complete their degree within the next year are strongly encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should send a CV, a short statement of research interests and an unofficial transcript to sven.simon at eas.gatech.edu. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The position will remain open until filled. Qualified candidates would start in Fall 2017.
