Space Weather RFI Comment Period Extended to April 6, 2018

From: Michael Wiltberger (mwiltber at nsf.gov)

In support of the Space Weather Operations, Research, and Mitigation (SWORM) Subcommittee the National Science Foundation has posted a Request For Information (RFI) seeking input from the public on establishing space weather research priorities to address Action 5.5.1 in the National Space Weather Action Plan. The comment period for this RFI has been extended. The new comment period closes on April 6, 2018.

This RFI is intended to gather information from external stakeholders about potential space weather research activities that will help guide the science and technology priorities of Federal agencies. The public input will be used as guidance by various concerned Federal agencies in planning for targeted research programs. Input is sought from space weather community including researchers in academia and industry, non-governmental organizations, scientific and professional societies, and all other interested members of the public. Suggestions in response to this RFI will assist NSF and other federal agencies including NASA, DOC and DOD in carrying out action 5.5.1.

The full text of the RFI and procedures for submitting a formal comment can be found at

Space Weather Training by CCMC and NASA GSFC Heliophysics Division this June

From: Annna Chulaki (anna.chulaki at nasa.gov)

Space weather training organized by the CCMC and NASA GSFC Heliophysics Science Division, Space Weather REDI Bootcamp 2018, will be held at Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD) on June 4-8, 2018: https://ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov/support/SWREDI/bootcamp/

This space weather training will be presented by the NASA GSFC scientists (presenters include, but are not limited to, the CCMC staff). Tutorials will provide participants with a basic knowledge of space weather and forecasting, without going into detailed physics, and acquaint them with the applications of space weather.
While the bootcamp training is geared to undergraduate students, it will be beneficial for anyone interested in broadening their space weather knowledge - graduate students, educators, scientists, engineers, mission operators, and competitive high school students.

Application deadline: April 10, 2018

The Bootcamp is free, however ALL housing and transportation costs and arrangements are the responsibility of the bootcamp participant.

PhD Position in Atmospheric Physics at NTNU, Trondheim Norway

From: Patrick Espy (Patrick.espy at ntnu.no)

A PhD position within the field of atmospheric physics is available at the Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The appointment is for 3 years with a projected start in August 2018. There is the possibility of a 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the Department.

The PhD program is hosted by the Atmospheric and Environmental Physics group at NTNU,Trondheim, in close collaboration with NORSAR and the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) at Kjeller, near Oslo. You will be based at NTNU for half the project and then with NORSAR.

The research will develop combined interpretation methods for atmospheric infrasound and meteor radar datasets. These will be used to derive the winds and temperatures in the middle atmosphere in order to constrain high-top atmospheric models; to map the middle atmospheric dynamics; and to explore the coupling between atmospheric layers. There will be special focus on extreme events such as Sudden Stratospheric Warmings that are known to influence weather patterns. The ambition is to contribute to improved medium-range weather forecasting. The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway, coordinated by NORSAR, and involves both national and international institutes.

The applicant must have an MSc or equivalent in the physical sciences and a documented background in either atmospheric science, space physics, acoustics and wave propagation, or similar fields. We expect the candidates to have strong data analysis, statistical, and programming skills. The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language.

Further information can be obtained from: Professor Patrick Espy (patrick.espy at ntnu.no), Dr. Sven Peter Näsholm (peter at norsar.no), or Dr. Yvan Orsolini (yvan.orsolini at nilu.no).

The complete description of position may be found at the www.jobbnorge.no website, reference number: 149185. There is also a direct link to the position at https://tinyurl.com/NTNU-AtmPhysPhD, where the application can be submitted. Applications with a letter describing the candidate’s motivation, skills and personal qualifications for the position, together with a CV and certificates from both Bachelor and Master and the contact details for at least two referees must be submitted electronically through this website.

Applications submitted elsewhere will not be considered.

The NTNU reference number for the position is: NV-28/18 Application deadline: 15 May 2018
