Submit a Session Proposal for the 2018 Fall AGU Meeting

From: Anthony Mannucci, Todd Hoeksema, Elizabeth Macdonald (anthony.j.mannucci at jpl.nasa.gov)

The 2018 AGU Fall Meeting is in Washington DC this year, December 10-14. AGU is currently accepting proposals for scientific sessions. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 18. To submit a session proposal, go to: https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/session-proposals/

New topics, and contributions from first-time session planners and those under-represented in our field, are especially welcome. Before submitting your proposal, please look to see if a session on a similar theme has already been submitted. If so, consider rewriting your session proposal so it is focused on a unique topic. You can view existing submissions here: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm18/preliminaryview.cgi/programs.html .  Note that you must be a member of the AGU to be the primary convener of a session.

Besides the traditional oral- and poster-session formats, you can organize a panel, arrange for short-presentations, or organize an eLightning session. For more information, go to the “Alternate Session Formats” tab under “Prepare For Submission”. New this year is the opportunity to propose a Tutorial Talk. A link describing Tutorial Talks is on the session proposal page. All submissions follow a similar procedure.

If you have any questions, please contact one of your SPA secretaries (SM: Elizabeth Macdonald, SH: Todd Hoeksema, SA: Anthony Mannucci)

LANL CSES 2018 Call for Proposals

From: Reiner Friedel (rfriedel at lanl.gov)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
Center for Space and Earth Science (CSES)
(CSES is the follow-on institution to the defunct IGPP at LANL)

CSES 2018 Call for Proposals (FY19 New Starts)

The call has been released and is available at
http://www.lanl.gov/projects/national-security-education-center/space-earth-center/_assets/docs/cses-2018-call-for-proposals.pdf

Two of the CSES programs should be of interest to the general scientific community:

The CSES Student Fellow Program [Proposals Due April 20, 2018]
The Chick Keller Postdoctoral Fellow Program [Proposals due quarterly, next dates are April 4, July 5 and October 24]

Please note that both programs are designed to enable student and postdoc research at Los Alamos, and to enable LANL staff to form closer collaborations with academic institutions. For both programs it is essential that prospective students or postdocs identify a LANL Mentor: All proposals need to be submitted by the LANL Mentor!

Interested students and prospective postdocs are encouraged to exploit existing LANL contacts of their academic mentors and faculty.

For questions about these programs and for help in identifying suitable LANL mentors please contact cses at lanl.gov or contact the specific science discipline leads of the CSES Focus areas directly:

• Astrophysics and Cosmology (Hui Li; hli at lanl.gov)
(Chris Fryer; fryer at lanl.gov [Center for Theoretical Astrophysics])
• Space Science (Geoffrey Reeves; reeves at lanl.gov)
• Geophysics (David Coblentz; coblentz at lanl.gov)
• Earth Systems (Keeley Costigan; krc at lanl.gov)

Please also not that the Call for proposals lists a set of focussed science topics for each of the above discipline areas, and that proposals need to address these topics. Work scope outside of the focussed science topics will not be eligible for funding.

MEETING: Third MMS Community Workshop – Second Announcement

From: Michael Hesse (michael.hesse at uib.no)

Third MMS Community Workshop
University of Bergen
Bergen, Norway
11-14 June 2018

The third MMS community workshop will be held on 11-14 June, 2018, in Bergen, Norway. This workshop is open to the broad scientific community with interest in magnetic reconnection and other, MMS-related, science topics. Breakout sessions will be held on June 11 at the University of Bergen, and the science workshop will be on June 12-14 at the Scandic Ørnen hotel in the center of town.

MMS community workshops invite the broad space research community engaged in MMS-related science topics. The main workshop will feature scientific presentations addressing topics ranging from magnetic reconnection to the bow shock, particle acceleration, and turbulence. Mission-related breakout sessions will focus on mission operations, instrument-related issues, and special science topics. Further meeting information, including lodging information, can be found on the web site:

http://www.uib.no/en/ift/112841/mms-workshop-2018

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is 30 April 2018.

Due to the tourist season in Bergen it is advisable to make hotel reservations as soon as possible.

Monday Science Telecon

From: David Sibeck (david.g.sibeck at nasa.gov)

At 12:00 noon EST on Monday (March 26), we plan to hold the next in our ongoing series of science telecons. The speaker this Monday will be Drew Turner from Aerospace Corporation. The topic will be "New insights on energetic particle injections and substorm activity from Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and Van Allen Probes".

The telecom will be broadcast live via webex. If you would like to join, please
go to http://uclaigpp.webex.com/, search for the ‘Dayside Science' meeting, enter your name and contact information, and then the meeting password, which is Substorm1!

To hear the audio, do not dial the number that pops up on the webex website. Instead, please dial the following toll free (in the United States) number:

JOB OPENING: Three-year PostDoc Opportunity at the University of Oslo

From: Lasse Clausen (lasse.clausen at fys.uio.no)

In July 2017 the first Norwegian scientific satellite was launched into a polar orbit. On board it carries the multi-needle Langmuir Probe (m-NLP) developed and built at the University of Oslo. This instrument is capable of measuring the ionospheric plasma density with a sampling rate of 1000 Hz, thereby mapping the ionospheric state at an unprecedented resolution. The successful candidate will utilize this unique dataset to identify and investigate the mechanisms that cause ionospheric plasma structuring. By combining high-resolution plasma density data from NorSat-1 with data from SuperDARN, AMPERE, and DMSP, the successful candidate is expected to study the impact of plasma convection, large-scale field-aligned currents, and particle precipitation on small-scale ionospheric structures. We expect that this work will lead to several significant advances in the field of plasma turbulence.

The successful candidate will be a part of the Section for Plasma and Space Physics at The Department of Physics as well as the 4DSpace strategic research initiative. The main focus of these groups is to advance our understanding of high latitude electrodynamics and its impact on technological systems like GPS and Galileo. The main tools used in these investigations are advanced numerical models (both fluid and particle-in-cell codes), ground-based radar and optical systems (EISCAT, SuperDARN), instruments on board spacecraft (Swarm, NorSat-1), and in situ measurements made by sounding rockets (the ICI-rocket series). For more information, see:
http://www.mn.uio.no/fysikk/english/research/projects/4dspace/

Required qualifications:

- A Ph.D. degree (completed before July 1st 2018) or equivalent
- Documented experience in the analysis of space plasma physics data from ground-based and/or space-based instruments
- Strong programming skills
- A good command of English

Desired qualifications:

The candidate is expected to take part in our rocket and spacecraft missions, and should preferably have some experience with plasma waves, instabilities, turbulence and/or other dynamic phenomena related to solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. Experience using data from SuperDARN, AMPERE, or DMSP is considered a plus.

We offer

- Salary NOK 490 900 – 569 000 per annum depending on qualifications in position as Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (position code 1352)
- Attractive welfare benefits and a generous pension agreement, in addition to Oslo’s family-friendly environment with its rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities
