John T (Jack) Gosling (1938-2018)

From: Steve Schwartz (steven.schwartz at lasp.colorado.edu)

It is with great sadness that we report the death of John T. (Jack) Gosling on May 10, 2018, after a long battle with metastatic lung cancer. Jack had a distinguished career in heliospheric physics. He made seminal contributions to understanding the structure and dynamics of the solar wind (including pioneering work on the nature of coronal mass ejections), the Earth's bow shock, and magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause and throughout the heliosphere. He was a Fellow of the AGU, a Fellow of the AAAS, a Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory, and served as AGU SPA President. He was a recipient of AGU's John Adam Fleming Award and of the National Academy of Science’s Arctowski Medal. He also was one of the most highly cited authors in space science. A long-time staff member at Los Alamos, Jack was most recently working at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado. He brought clear thought processes, encyclopaedic knowledge, persistent curiosity, and piercing critical questioning to his work and to all of us who had the great honor of working with him.

A private graveside service will take place Thursday, May 17, 2018. Letters of condolence sent to any of us will be forwarded to his wife Judy. Anyone wishing to make a donation in remembrance may wish to give to either the Sister Carmen Community Center (https://sistercarmen.org) or the John T Gosling Endowed Fellowship, a fund used to support undergraduate and graduate student research pursuits in the field of space physics at LASP (http://lasp.colorado.edu/home/about/givingtolasp/scholarships-and-fellowships/ or https://giving.cu.edu/fund/john-t-gosling-endowed-fellowship-fund).
