JOB OPENING: Space Physics Faculty Position

From: Ramon Lopez (relopez at uta.edu)

Assistant/Associate Professor in Space Physics
The Department of Physics
at The University of Texas at Arlington
Position ID: F00208P

The Department of Physics at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applicants for a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in space physics beginning August 2020. The space physics group in the department is the recipient of a Phase-1 DRIVE Center grant that focuses on modeling and analysis of interhemispheric asymmetries in the geospace system. The successful candidate will be able to contribute substantially to that work, either in the area of modeling or data analysis, and to enhance the ability of the team to win the Phase-2 competition for a full DRIVE Center.

The key objective is to hire faculty members with outstanding qualifications who share the University’s core values of high standards of excellence in teaching, innovative and collaborative research, and service, combined with fostering an open and inclusive environment and with promoting diversity and participation of groups that are currently underrepresented.

The successful candidate must meet all expectations of a tenure-track faculty candidate: to establish an independent, externally funded research program in space physics, to provide research and mentoring opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, and to teach physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. An earned doctorate in physics or a closely related field is required.

To apply applicants should go to http://uta.peopleadmin.com/ and submit the following materials: a cover letter, full curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching objectives and contact information of at least three references.

Questions about the openings should be addressed to Dr. Ramon Lopez via e-mail (relopez at uta.edu).

Review of applications will begin on April 6, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled.

JOB OPENING: Research Scientist at the Boston College Institute for Scientific Research

From: Patricia Doherty (patricia.doherty at bc.edu)

Applications are invited for a Research Scientist position in the fields of ionospheric physics and space weather. Applicants should hold a PhD in space physics or a related field and a track record of publications in peer reviewed journals.

The successful candidate will conduct research relevant to understanding the near-earth space environment and its impacts on radio frequency (RF) systems. Experimental and/or modeling experience is preferred. Desired skills include the ability to develop, test and deploy RF sensors operating in passive and active modes, system prototyping to include algorithm development and real-time system operation, and tools for analysis of the collected data requiring familiarity with digital signal processing techniques such as optimization, filtering, and image processing. Familiarity with machine learning/data science techniques is also valuable.

The candidate will have proficiency in analysis of ground-based and space-based ionospheric instrument measurements together with scientific programming and visualization experience in computer languages such as MATLAB, IDL, Python, Fortran and C/C++. Candidates with prior research experience modeling high-frequency (HF) propagation, ionospheric irregularities, and scintillation are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants at the Research Scientist and/or Senior Research Scientist level will be considered. Salary will be commensurate with experience and responsibilities.

The selected candidate will work in a successful research group at the Institute for Scientific Research at Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts. US citizenship is preferred. Please send a CV together with contact information for two references to Patricia Doherty at Boston College (Patricia.Doherty at bc.edu) by April 16, 2020.
