JOB OPENING: Research Associate in Magnetic Fields in Planetary Systems at Imperial College London (3 posts, deadline 9 June 2022)

From: Adam Masters, Michele Doughetry (a.masters at imperial.ac.uk)

Three Research Associate positions are available in magnetic fields in planetary systems in the Department of Physics at Imperial College London. The postholders will produce original research results within this broad field. They will work independently, collaborating with members of the space and atmospheric physics group and members of the international scientific community. They will communicate the results of their work to the community and submit publications to peer-reviewed journals. The postholders are expected to support the running of the group and contribute to teaching.

Three posts are available within this broad field of research.

Electromagnetic Sounding of Solar System Bodies (1 post)
Line-managed by Dr Adam Masters, working closely with Prof Michele Dougherty.

The aim of this post is to establish the potential of passive electromagnetic sounding to constrain the interior structure of different solar system bodies, including Mercury, Mars, and the many icy moons of the giant planets. The postholder will implement and apply an established one-dimensional model of inductive response to each body. Present knowledge of internal electrical conductivity structure with associated uncertainties, combined with the frequencies of known background electromagnetic signals, will allow model application that establishes the full potential of future passive electromagnetic sounding for furthering our knowledge of each body’s interior structure. Example topics that will be impacted are the search for groundwater on Mars, and the identification and characterisation of possible ocean habitats inside giant planet moons. This work will directly support our plans to begin developing magnetotelluric instrumentation for surface deployment during exploratory space missions.

The Magnetic Environments of Jupiter and Ganymede: Preparing for the JUICE Mission (2 posts)
Line-managed by Prof Michele Dougherty, working closely with Dr Adam Masters.

The aim of these posts is to further our knowledge of Jupiter’s and/or Ganymede’s magnetic field environment in direct support of the European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission. We recently delivered the JUICE magnetic field investigation. Once in the Jupiter system our instrument will provide the data needed to separate different contributions to the magnetic field around Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest and magnetised moon, ultimately leading to the characterisation of Ganymede’s sub-surface ocean of liquid water. The postholders will contribute to the definition of priority investigations to be carried out in support of this key objective, subsequently carrying out these investigations using the theory, data analysis, numerical modelling, or a combination of approaches. Relevant themes include the state of Jupiter’s magnetosphere along Ganymede’s orbital path, physics of Ganymede’s magnetosphere, induction in Ganymede’s sub-surface ocean, and magnetic field generation by a dynamo action deeper inside this moon.

For more information and to apply please see the below link. Also, feel free to contact Dr Adam Masters (a.masters at imperial.ac.uk) and Prof Michele Dougherty (m.dougherty at imperial.ac.uk). The closing date for this is 9 June 2022.
