" A 34-year dataset of regional modeling over south Asia describing precipitation and temperature trends associated with glacier retreat/advance over the Himalaya and Karakoram"

Recent studies have shown that glaciers in the central and eastern Himalaya are retreating at as high a rate as any others on Earth, while many glaciers in the Karakoram and western Himalaya are stable or even advancing. The climatological causes of this contrast are investigated via 34 years of dynamical downscaling from 1979-2013 of global reanalyses with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model over High Asia at convection-permitting resolution. The model output shows a downward trend in precipitation and an upward trend in temperature over the glaciated parts of the central and eastern Himalaya since 1979, in both winter and summer months. Meanwhile, over the Karakoram, there has been no significant change in either precipitation or temperature in winter or summer. The changes in the climatological large-scale flow patterns over south Asia from 1979 to 2013 are illustrated at various times of year and it is shown how these have had differing impacts in orographic flow patterns and cloud formation over the various glaciated sub-regions. These precipitation and temperature trends likely explain much of the difference in glacier retreat/advance between the Karakoram and central Himalaya.
