Greetings,
A quick update here to let you know what is in the pipeline for UCLA Logon ID Security.

Recently UCLA IT Services rolled out multi-factor authentication (MFA) for logging into UCLA online services that require the UCLA single-sign on. At the present time this is optional but with the beginning of the new school year we are expecting it to become required on new UCLA accounts. The word I have gotten is that those UCLA employees who need access to student records or financial applications over the web will be the next group for which it will become required. At some point it will become required for all users of the UCLA system.

While it may still be optional the use of MFA does significantly increase the security on your account. And the system UCLA has implemented is more flexible than many with a variety of alternatives as to how to supply the secondary authentication. While they are recommending a smartphone app it is also possible to get the secondary authentication by phone call or text message.

Yes, it can be an annoyance to jump through another hoop, but with all the cybersecurity issues these days it can be considered the ounce of prevention.

If you are interested in learning more the start page is at https://www.it.ucla.edu/security/resources/mfa-at-ucla
It provides a good introduction and some explanation of the system, as well as the link to get started and set it up.

Thanks for your help and please let me know if you have questions.
