2. 2016 Mini-GEM Session: Transient Phenomena at the Magnetopause and Bow Shock and Their Ground Signatures
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Hui Zhang (hzhang14 at alaska.edu)

The "Transient Phenomena at the Magnetopause and Bow Shock and Their Ground Signatures" focus group will be having a meeting at the 2016 GEM mini-workshop.

Time: 3:30-5:00 PM, Sunday, December 11, 2016
Location: Nevada Room, Holiday Inn Golden Gateway Hotel (1500 Van Ness Avenue)

If you wish to give a presentation, please send the title of your presentation to Hui Zhang (hzhang14 at alaska.edu) by Friday, Dec 9th.

Looking forward to seeing you at San Francisco!

Focus Group Coordinators:
Hui Zhang, University of Alaska Fairbanks (hzhang14 at alaska.edu)
Q.-G. Zong, University of Massachusetts Lowell (qgzong at gmail.com)
Michael Ruohoniemi, Virginia Polytechnic and State University (mikeruo at vt.edu)
David Murr, Augsburg College (murrdl at augsburg.edu)

3. 2016 Mini-GEM Session: Reconnection in the Magnetosphere
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Paul Cassak, Andrei Runov, Brian Walsh, Yi-Hsin Liu (Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu)

There will be a Magnetic Reconnection in the Magnetosphere session at the Mini-GEM the Sunday before the upcoming AGU meeting. The session is currently scheduled for 3:30-5:00pm in the Washington room at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway. (Please check http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gem-mini/index.html for updates.) This year, we will spend about ~40 minutes on open discussion format on any topic relevant to the focus group and ~40 minutes discussing whether there is community desire to propose a new focus group after this one ends after the 2017 meeting. People interested in participating in an effort are encouraged to volunteer. Due to the expectation of high demand, people interested in discussing a science topic are restricted to 2 slides in the GEM style. Please email Paul.Cassak at mail.wvu.edu to be included on the list of desired discussion leaders; we will accommodate as many as we can.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.

4. 2016 Mini-GEM session: Dayside Kinetic Processes in Global Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Interaction
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Heli Hietala, Gabor Toth, Xochitl Blanco-Cano, and Andrew P. Dimmock (heli at igpp.ucla.edu)

We invite you to participate in the Dayside Kinetics Focus Group’s session at the upcoming mini-GEM on Sunday December 11, at 13:50-15:20 in the Gold Rush B Room of Holiday Inn Golden Gateway. The session will consist of two ~45 minute parts.

Part 1: Contributed presentations
We solicit short presentations of your work on observations and modeling of kinetic processes at the magnetopause, magnetosheath, bow shock and foreshock as well as their global connections. If you’d like to speak in our session (first come, first served), please send your talk title to Heli Hietala (heli at igpp.ucla.edu) by Thursday, Dec 8.

Part 2: Dayside modeling challenge
The southward IMF event from 2015-11-18 around 02:00 UT (MMS-Geotail magnetopause conjunction with SuperDARN radar observations) presented at the Summer Workshop has been selected as the primary challenge event. The focus of the discussion during this part of the session will be on the set of metrics to be used to make observation-observation, observation-model, and model-model comparisons. The detailed specs of the primary and secondary/follow-up challenge events and the list of metrics will then be posted on the CCMC and the FG websites.

5. Abstract Submission Open for the URSI General Assembly (August 2017, Montreal, Canada)
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Craig J. Rodger, Ondrej Santolik (craig.rodger at otago.ac.nz)

Dear colleagues

We would like to alert you to the upcoming URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, which includes multiple sessions relevant to the GEM community.

The abstract deadline is 30 January 2017
The meeting will occur from 19-26 August 2017 in Montreal, Canada

Conference website: http:// http://www.ursi2017.org

Please consider submitting an abstract to our sessions, and travelling to Montreal to attend this conference! Note that there is also a very strong URSI Young Scientist program, which will provide substantial support for young researchers under 35 to attend this meeting. Additionally, students can also participate in the Student Paper competition. Thus this conference is an excellent opportunity for any early career scientists or students you know of!

The program highlights a General Lecture by Steven A. Cummer on "Transient luminous events and terrestrial gamma ray flashes", a Commission H Tutorial lecture by Craig Rodger on "Drivers, detection, and wider significance of precipitation from the radiation belts" and also the tutorial lectures of other URSI commissions.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of URSI, the instructions for abstract submission allow multiple types of submissions, from a basic abstract through to a 4-page summary paper. Please note that a usual short abstract of ~250 words is sufficient for normal or invited submissions of an oral or poster presentation in all sessions relevant to our field. However, application for a URSI Young Scientist Award requires submission of a 4-page summary paper. This will be used by the URSI national committees to rank the applicants and determine who gets the support. A longer paper is required to participate in the Student Paper competition.

*** Highly relevant sessions organized by the URSI Commission H ***
