1. Call for Applications for Multiple GEM Steering Committee Positions
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Jacob Bortnik, Paul Cassak (jbortnik at atmos.ucla.edu)

As you know, the success of the GEM program lies in the dedicated service made by members of the steering committee. This year we have six openings on the GEM steering committee due to the regular off-rotation of half of the ten Research Area Coordinators, as well as a regular Steering Committee member position. We invite interested members of the community to apply for these positions or nominate other suitable candidates.

For a list of the current steering committee members and related information, please see the following link on the GEM website:

http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/Organization_and_People

The duties and responsibilities of the various SC positions are summarized in the GEM "best practices" document, which can be found here:

http://www-ssc.igpp.ucla.edu/gem/pdf/GEM_BestPractices_22Sep2017.pdf

The selection of these new positions will occur at the steering committee meeting which typically takes place on the Sunday night before the GEM Workshop. In preparation for this meeting, the steering committee would like to solicit applications, which should consist of a succinct one-page CV and a separate brief statement of interest (no more than half a page), describing the applicant's interest in the position, any relevant experience, and the applicant's approach to maintaining an interactive and workshop-style meeting.

Applications will be accepted until Friday June 1st. To submit an application or a nomination, please send the requested documents to the current steering committee chair and chair-elect, Jacob Bortnik (jbortnik AT atmos.ucla.edu) and Paul Cassak (Paul.Cassak AT mail.wvu.edu).

4. "ULF wave modeling, effects, and applications" Focus Group Sessions at 2018 GEM Summer Workshop
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Michael Hartinger, Kazue Takahashi, Brian Kress (mdhartin at vt.edu)

The GEM UMEA focus group seeks to address basic science questions and modeling/observation challenges pertaining to Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves. To request a presentation at the 2018 GEM meeting, please use this form by June 8 (or email the co-chairs):
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf-6cpqIa1tQS7CenZLm3v-sRQBLGtSyomHftf0d320bEJMFQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

Monday 1030AM, joint with Dipolarization and Substorm FG - ULF waves during particle injections and dipolarizations: This session focuses on the relationship between particle injections/dipolarizations and Pc4-5/Pi2/EMIC waves (e.g., Why are waves driven in only some events? Do waves impact the ring current/radiation belts?) We request 3-4 slide presentations and discussion of models, observations, and HGSO/ground observation coordination needed to better understand the relationship between ULF waves and injections/dipolarizations.

Monday 130 PM - Recent advances in ULF wave research: Brief overview of focus group goals and recent progress, including a request for feedback on future sessions. The remainder of the session is open for 3-4 slide presentations of recent advances in ULF wave research.

Monday 330 PM - EMIC wave generation, propagation, and interactions (discussion leaders: Alexander Drozdov and Maria Usanova): The generation mechanisms of EMIC waves, their effects on trapped particles, and their propagation through the M-I system are challenging topics that involve multiple GEM research areas. Despite several years of observations and improved global wave statistics, there are many unresolved questions that limit further investigation, modeling and prediction of processes in the inner magnetosphere involving EMIC waves. We request short presentations and discussion that unite recent findings in different areas of EMIC wave research and identify observations/models most needed to address unresolved questions.

Wednesday 1030 AM, joint with MMV - ULF wave modeling challenge: Overview of the ULF wave modeling challenge, including discussion of the ULF wave challenge event on 27-28 May 2017 (http://aten.igpp.ucla.edu/gemwiki/index.php/FG:_ULF_Wave_Modeling%2C_Effects%2C_and_Applications) and coordinated analysis aimed at identifying additional science targets for the modeling challenge. We request 1-2 slide presentations of observations and simulation results during the event.

6. Call for Community Input to LWS TR&T Focused Science Topics
------------------------------------------------------------
From: Mark Linton (mark.linton at nrl.navy.mil)

The 2018 NASA Living with a Star Targeted Research and Technology (LWS TR&T) Program Analysis Group (LPAG https://lwstrt.gsfc.nasa.gov/lpag) executive committee (EC) will soon begin developing the next round of LWS focused science topics for ROSES 2019 and beyond. It is vital for the success of the LWS TR&T program that there be active community engagement in the development of annual TR&T science topics. We are therefore asking the Heliophysics community to provide input by July 2, 2018 for these topics.

Suggested science topics should be organized around achieving the goals set out in the strategic science areas (SSA’s) articulated in the LWS Ten Year Vision:
https://lwstrt.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/pdf/LWS_10YrVision_Oct2015_Final.pdf

Physics-based Understanding to Enable Forecasting of:

From: Masha Kuznetsova, Leila Mays (m.leila.mays at nasa.gov)

Manuscripts are invited for a special section to highlight the progress of working teams of the International Forum on Space Weather Capabilities Assessment. The submission dedaline has been extended to 30 June 2018. The Forum activities were initiated during the International CCMC - LWS Working Meeting: “Assessing Space Weather Understanding and Applications”, April 3 - 7, 2017, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Forum aims to address the need to quantify and to track progress over time in the field of space weather and to establish internationally recognized metrics for objective model evaluations. Such metrics must be meaningful to end-users of space weather information, model developers, and decision makers. Expected outcomes of the Forum activities include developing means to aid in tracking the progress of the LWS program towards its goals. Topics covered by the special collection include: defining metrics for essential space weather quantities; benchmarking the current state of space environment models, applications and forecasting techniques; addressing challenges in data-model comparisons; tracking progress in incorporation of scientific ideas into space weather applications. While the focus of this special collection is contributions from the Forum working teams, related manuscripts from the community are also invited. If you have questions about this special collection please contact the associate editor for the special collection (Dan Welling) or special collection organizers (Masha Kuznetsova, Leila Mays, Yihua Zheng, Ja Soon Shim).
