Good Morning,
I was chatting with a guy in Rolla, MO (my hometown) via d-star last night. The repeater that I was linked to is run by the Missouri S&T ARC (W0EEE). The guy I was talking to said that icom donated the d-star repeater and equipment to the club in order to further D-STAR's adoption. The requirements were that they come up with 10 people to register on the D-STAR gateway and a couple of other minor requirements.
Maybe we should look in to this if it is still available, as D-STAR is a very neat evolution of amateur radio in my opinion, and there are a couple of companies in addition to icom that have D-STAR equipment in development as well. I plan to start playing with DVAPs, hotspots, etc. built on the Raspberry PI platform in the near future.
If anyone would like a D-STAR demo, I'd be happy to bring my 2820 in to the shack and let everyone see what all the buzz is about.
